Great museum with all sorts of volcanic rocks. Good explanations of how everything formed. Liked the Richter Scale showing all the earthquakes happening every day and the map showing where on the island they occurred.

Go to the Jaggar at night to see the glow of the volcano. The museum is very informative. Parking at night can be very crowded, arrive early.

It is a short drive from the main road to the main gate of the park and then on to the museum. Even if one has only an hour to spare, it's definitely worth the time. First, there is enough basic information about volcanoes, and particularly the volcanoes of Hawaii, that one can get a good understanding of the forces at work. Second, there are samples of various types of rocks and other matter that are created by the erupting volcano. Third, the view from the museum's lookout point looks right down into the caldera where one can see steam vents (but not molten lava). There is a gift shop as part of the museum but no food. And there are restrooms onsite.

From here you can see the volcano smolder continuously. Especially recommend to see it at night! Just watch your step. Not much light here. I nocked my shin into the bike rack that wasn't lit up.

This was the best view of an active crater (actually a good size steam vent). Since the roads are closed to actually see lava, we bought the video. Bummer. Worth the stop for photos.

Take the time and go see this wonder!! If you can hike go for it!! I can't so we did the closer walks and appreciated the rails along the pathways where it was steep.

The Thomas A. Jaggar Museum is part of Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is at the site of the active Halemaumau crater of the Kilauea volcano. An entrance fee to the park is charged. The museum provides ample information concerning the volcano including many displays, equipment and USGS data and materials. It is displayed well and user friendly. A small souvenir shop is also present along with another building containing restrooms. The views from this location were spectacular, including those of the caldera. We arrived very late in the afternoon since the highlight of our trip was to wait until sundown to see the red glow of the lava illuminate the fumes of the active crater. It was a real experience shared with many other visitors of many different nationalities. The sounds of oos and ahs and camera clicks pervaded the area for quite some time as we watched some of mother nature's fireworks attentively. It is a very worthwhile experience, perhaps the next best thing to standing next to real lava however, if you're going to go, bring some warm clothes because the temperatures drop and can become somewhat uncomfortable.Note: If you are over 62 years of age, you can purchase a lifetime senior pass for a one time fee of $10.00 that gives you and up to 3 family members or you and any carload of individuals free entry into any National Park or National Park supported attraction. One can purchase the pass at any National Park or through application on line.

Located closest to the erupting volcano. Excellent displays about how and why the volcano erupts. Excellent viewing area to see the volcano at night but could do with more lighting on the walkways.

Visit museum at sundown (open til 7:30) and see sunset over the crater, then it's red glow as night comes on. Informative displays, although they will need updating to match current museum installation standards. Still the information is worthwhile.
