没打满分是因为确实离大岛无论是kona还是hilo都有很远的车程。经过Kamehameha雕像后，道路两边开始变得郁郁葱葱，逐渐进入山区，两边风景很好。观景台上可以看到广袤的太平洋，海风下植被摇曳的身影配合背景的海水，很美的景色。旁边有小路可以下到黑沙滩上，大约25分钟脚程。

Ever since I slipped on some ice in my driveway three years ago and hit my head on the concrete, I have been terrified of falling. The hike down to this gorgeous beach elicited those same exact fears. Our party of 4 took this hike after it had been raining for most of the previous two days. The trail was made up of mud and slick rocks. The hike down to the beach took about 45 minutes in those conditions. Had it not been for my wonderful hubby and a walking stick, I probably would not have made it. Do not attempt this hike in anything other than good, sturdy hiking shoes, trail running shoes, or something like that. No flip-flops or sandals. Once you get down to the beach, it is GORGEOUS! Very beautiful, scenic views, not commercialized. I'm glad I survived the terror of the hike getting down there to see it! The black sand is so fine and powdery. The hike back up was relatively easy. It was still slick, of course, but I found it much easier to balance myself going uphill. Even if the trail is dry, it is not an easy trail. Be prepared--water, sunscreen, a walking stick, and maybe a snack. There are no restroom facilities of any kind either at the beginning, during, or at the end of the hike. The parking is awful. You basically park at a dead end road with almost no room to turn around in. I recommend this challenging, beautiful hike!

It is so worth it to hike down and back up from the valley. We saw people of all ages enjoying the exercise and scenery. Everyone was courteous and patient on the trail. There are no facilities - so be sure to use bathrooms in nearby Hawi before you go. Parking is limited but just park off the road and walk.

Ideally go travel up north to see this when it is sunny. The view would be more spectacular, however my family and I went on a pouring down rain kind of day. Still a spectacular sight! If it rains though the trail down is incredibly muddy so be prepared to fall on your butt! This hike is not meant for people who can't walk down steep paths or over and up rocks and logs. Once down there, it is absolutely beautiful. Very green and no one else was there when I hiked down. (probably due to the rain)

A nice hike down to the beach.The views are breathtaking - like something out of the movies. We hiked down in good time and hiked around exploring and enjoying the outdoors. The hike up and is certainly a good workout. Try not to park right close to the start of the path. It's hard to turn around. Save yourself the trouble and park on the side of the road and walk the extra minute.

Everything about Pololu was wonderful! From the drive there through the small north shore towns to arriving and seeing the amazing view. Worth visiting whether you just take the view in from above or take to the next valley. We choice to do the hike. From the lookout we hiked down to the beach. Beautiful black sand but we careful going into the water as the current can be dangerous. The hotel recommended not doing in past your knees. After some time on the beach we found the trail to the other side of the valley -- it is at the far end of the beach. When we were there the first part of this hike was steep and a little difficult from the recent wet weather conditions. After that short section the trial opened up and was much easier to manage. You know you have reached the next lookout/valley when you see a park bench. It's about a 45 minute hike up from the beach and worth every minute.. The view is wide open and stunning! This was our favorite hike on the trip. On your way out stop in Hawi - a quaint small Hawaiian town. Talk a stroll down the two to three block Main Street. There are cute shops and a place to grab a shaved ice to cool off!!

Beautiful black-sand beach, but you shouldn't swim there. Apparently there are rip tides pretty often and swimming is strongly discouraged. So you're making the trip for the hike, the view, and the experience of walking on a black sand beach. If you're visiting Hawi, it's a pretty easy drive from there, maybe 20 minutes. The hike down to the beach is about 15 minutes, the hike up is about 20. The hike up can be pretty strenuous at times, but I thing most people with a modicum of fitness should have no trouble. Now, if you up for a bigger challenge, at the far end of the beach is another trail to what's called the 2nd Valley. This offers a spectacular view from a high vantage of a broad lush valley on one side, and a craggy coast on the other. This is a much more difficult hike - especially if it rained recently because the trail gets muddy. You need to have some hiking experience for this trail. I think the 2nd Valley trail is about an hour round trip - and then you've got to do the walk back up out of the 1st Valley. It's rumored that some Aussie dude made it to the 3rd Valley - it looked impossible to me.

After driving for a length of time on narrow winding rads with no proper directions on the road, one ends up at a dead end,with no parking, no facilities and a view about 500 feet above a small bay with no facilities, no access to the bay or beach, unless you are a mountain goat, and you have a nightmare for parking and turning around to get out

The view from top is quite scenic however if you hike down to the beach views of the coastline become even more spectacular. You'll descend to the Polulu Valley on a fairly steep trail with plenty of spots to catch views and take photos. Wear runners or shoes with good footing instead of the commonly worn sandals or flip-flops. The trail is mostly in the open until you reach the bottom; there's a variety of local Hawaiian vegetation and plants to enjoy. Polulu Beach is a beautiful spot to explore as well as wave watch. Relax and enjoy the coastal view before ascending back up the trail which is more difficult than the descent. The hike down takes a good 1/2 hour and the return trip 45-50 minutes. The Pololu Lookout and beach/valley access is much more accessible by foot than the trail/road which descends from the Waipio Lookout to the valley & beach below.

Pololu beach is such a place.Some legends say this is where Kamehameha learned to surf...While experienced lifeguards enjoyed the waves, this is not a safe beach for swimmers.
