We parked at the bottum of the hill after the look out, right before the first bridge, and got out our fold out bikes to explore the valley. We looked everywhere, and this appears to be the only road where you can explore the Hanelai valley, and it is right beside the Halelei River. There are many paddlers who have rented kayaks and SUP from a rental place further downstream. They are close enough that you can chat with the paddlers below .. We had to cross one of those single lane bridges and the cars were accomodating patient and we felt safe . Lots of amazing things to see in this bird sanctuary. Tons of birds we found no where else. Lots of kapu signs so obviously there have been infractions. Very mild undulating well paved road. Beautiful gardens, Huge working farms with taro fields, cattle and the lush astounding growth that is only in the North, and Na Pali velvetty peaks surround. Magical.. About half way up the road there is a little known hiking area and we met people coming down from the hike. They were pretty sweaty and muddy, the usual North hiking look but they said the views are great. About two miles each way. Road eventually peters out, about an hour return. Perfect

If you are visiting Hawaii, you probably want to see all the beautiful sites you can. This is one of those sites. Very nice high view of valley below. Enjoyed the stop.

There is a great view of the mountains and the taro fields. Best to stop coming east from Hanalei just before Princeville as it is on the south side of the highway.

Odd to review a lookout, but this brief scenic stop above the Hanalei Valley should not be passed up. Just after Princeville and before going down the hill towards Hanalei, the lookout is on the left. If it is fairly clear and not raining,it is an incredible vista of the taro fields below and the towering lushly covered mountains beyond. After a rain, the multiple waterfalls can be seen striping down the distant mountain sides. Step over the low railings to get the best photos! When you get down to the valley turn right after the metal bridge and drive into the valley and taro fields, but don't trespass into the fields or private property! Bird and wildlife sanctuary is on both sides of the road.

Stopped on a day when it was not very clear. Many clouds covering the mountains. It was still a good brief stop to get a view of another one of the diverse scenic areas of Kauai.

This is a post card waiting to happen. This overlook is the best on the island and should not be missed. Great pictures and it had rained the previous two days so waterfalls were everywhere.

This is the ultimate Hanalei photo-op. Easier to pull over on the way back, be sure and spend some time absorbing the beauty. You can spot the Ne-Ne all over the valley. If you turn left right after the narrow bridge, you can see the Ne-Ne up close. Be careful not to run over them, they walk slowly wherever they go, often right down the middle of the road.

Remember, Kauai is a rainforest. After a rain this is one of the places to go and take pictures. There will be many many more waterfalls coming down from the hills, and the taro fields will be lush and the multiple colors of greens are breathtaking. We always need to keep that list of things to do when it rains, and this is one of them. There is a small area to park, it is right on the main road, and walk over to the railing, and look at something so breath taking.

With the Hanalei river meandering through the taro fields, it is a beautiful valley, and the lookout will give you some great photo ops.

On the road to Hanalei is the Hanalei Valley overlook which is well worth stopping for. The view is amazing. The mountains and waterfalls are in the backround. The valley is Lush, usually growing Taro, a local staple. What a view.
