We hiked a major portion of this trail, to a good lookout, and the road is/was rough enough much of the time that most rental cars companies won't even let you take a 4 x 4 on it.... Probably a good idea... Saw plenty of wildlife, and some excellent scenery...

Many posters are confusing the Munro Trail with the Koloiki Ridge Trail. The latter is the 5 mile hike behind the lodge, and there is a small amount of overlap with the Munro Trail. The Munro trail itself is a 12.5 mile dirt road that begins about a mile from the Lodge and ends at the road 2.5-3 miles above Manele Bay. On a late December morning, much of the trail was shrouded in mist and the road was largely empty. There were a few people out on an ATV excursion, and they looked cold and somewhat miserable, possibly also because the visibility was terrible and so there was nothing to see at most of the viewpoints. The trail did make for a very enjoyable, cool and shady long run. If you plan to traverse on foot, definitely bring enough water as once you get out of the cloud, the weather can be quite hot.

We did the short walk that starts behind the Lodge. Stop at the concierge and get a map before you start and give your name for safety reasons. Get a bottle of water too while you are there. Took about 4 hours round trip. Beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. Mild to medium exertion on this hike.

After seeing the reviews of this we decided it was something we really wanted to do so we booked a Hummer through the 808 hummers website and made arrangements to be picked up at the airport. We were met there by Jeff who gave us book of places to see and driving directions to them. When we asked him about the trail he informed us that there had been a bit of rain in the past few days so the trail might be a little muddy and slippery near the top and to turn around if we felt unsafe or uncomfortable. He was right and it was wet and muddy but we decided to go all the way anyway. We felt really comfortable in the hummer. We spent a few hours on the trail, stopping many times to take some amazing pictures of the native plants, the city, and some great pictures of Maui.We were a little embarrassed the next day when we returned the hummer covered in mud, but when we met Jim at the gas station he looked at the hummer, smiled and said, "It looks like you guys had fun"Driving the Munroe trail in the hummer was the highlight of our trip!

Your UTV ride with Western Adventures up the Munro Trail begins at the Stables at Koele and take you on trails through ironwood forests and up the ridge for some spectacular vistas. The weather in this area is diverse and you will likely experience foggy mist or sparkling sunshine or both while on the excursion. The Munro Trail is named after George Munro who came to Lanai in 1890 and is responsible for the reforestation of the island including the Cook Pines. These pines play an important role in supplying water through their root systems to aquifers. Your UTV adventure up the Munro Trail begins at the Stables at Koele and take you through trails through ironwood forests and up the ridge for some spectacular vistas. The weather in this area is diverse and you will likely experience foggy mist or sparkling sunshine or both while on the excursion. The soil of Lanai is dark red from the iron and minerals in the lava ash and cinder. We went on this UTV ride after some rain and the soil was fairly packed BUT... it was still pretty dusty and everything you wear and bring will have a nice layer of this fine red dust, especially if you are with other UTV riders and towards the back of the line. So... I would avoid bringing your nice white sweater or wearing your white sneakers and reccomend you bring bandanas to tie around your face and mouth. The outfitter will supply goggles. if you are bringing your nice SLR camera... Plastic bag it ! Some wish they had brought sweaters or light jackets as it was cooler at the top of the ridge but it was not that bad and you hit a range of tempetures. BTW, The hillsides can easily crumble so... A little common sense. All in all... FUN !

We took a guide and spent quite a few hours with her. She didnt really have alot of information to share- so you might ask around about who the best guides are before hiring one. If you have a smart phone, its fun to locate yourself on google earth when youre on the summit.

We rented a jeep from Dollar and did it anyway. Most of the trail was dry and it was a pretty smooth road considering where you're at. I wouldn't advise it if the road was wet.Well worth the effort but on that day we went the VOG was pretty thick so we couldn't see Oahu and the Big Island. I don't know if I would rent a Hummer because the road is very narrow in some spots, seemed just big enough for a Jeep Wrangler....

Best part of the trail is behind the luxurious Lodge at Koele. Moderate hike that ends high on the headland looking across the ocean at Molokai. Superb 2 hour walk you will not soon forget. Lodge provides you with water and a map if you are a guest there.

This is a great trail behind the Koele lodge hotel. The trail is a medium effort trail and expect to take about 2 hours. The view from the top are amazing we saw whales.
