T C Steele is arguably the finest and most widely recognized artist from the 19th Century Hoosier Salon. A plein air artist [from French "En plein air...an... expression which means 'in the open air' the act of painting outdoors, per Wikipedia], this is a total experience...an opportunity to see thelargest single collection of his work; his home; his studio; and the grounds. Look closely at the reviewers and you will note that most have penned only a select few reviews or a great many, suggesting the richness of an experience that would motivate such people to write. Yes, it is a bit out of the way but a rare total opportunity to not only take in excellent works but also get a real sense of the artist (and of his wife) and of his inspiration. Modest fee for tour.

A quiet place to see some real Hoosier art from the last century. It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the time you take to get there.

I have been here several times but my husband hadn't. We stopped by on Monday and the buildings were closed but the grounds were open. It was a lovely day and we walked around for a while and chatted with an employee. I love it when the plein air artists are there painting. It is great to see them and to paint with them. They do it in May and September. I love the house and the furnishing. The studio is full of his paintings which are awesome! They even have his table and paint brushes. It is not well advertized, but well worth a visit.

You'll see the early paintings of this genius, including one done before his teens. Learn how he followed his dream though all obstacles. Beautiful grounds and house. Learned a lot about early settlement of artists. Made me appreciate the long history of Brown County's aesthetic appeal.

Docent led tour. John was not only knowledgable but enthusiastic to share the history of TC Steele. Felt we knew the history of the art, studio and house when we left. John brought the family to life. John described Steele's progression in his career and his influence on Indiana's art community. We highly recommend going to this site. the state has a treasure in this beautifully kept site.

My wife and I enjoyed our visit of the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. We (and especially my wife) both enjoy art but were not familiar with T.C. Steele's life or work. We are now and are both big fans. The park was nice too with many hiking trails and places to have a picnic with family and friends. We recommend going to the office and signing up for a tour of his studio and of the house. The tours are on the 15 min mark of every hour and are $7 for adults and a little less for children and seniors.

Take the 1 hour, $5 tour. Well worth it. Because of cold weather, we were the only 2 on the tour so we got to ask lots of questions and see much of this esteemed artist's work.
