Smells a little like what I call artesian water (brackish) but is neat in its purpose. Wasn't flaming when I saw it but it is good.

Beautiful site. But the geese are taking over. Definitely worth a trip and if you are at the capital it is a no brainer to visit, but watch where you step. :)

The Flaming Fountain is very beautiful! IT is very interested to have a flame on top of a flowing fountain. The World War II display and statues are very well done. We also love capitol lake and love to feed the ducks, geese, and fish

The armed forces memorials are truely beautiful and moving. A visit at night is breath taking. More communitites should pay tribute to our fallen heros the way Pierre SD has.

The flaming fountain is part of the South Dakota Veterans Memorial, which honors war veterans from South Dakota. Unfortunately, when I was there (afternoon), there was no flame burning. But that didn't retract from the beauty of the monument. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. And maybe try at night to get the entire 'flaming fountain' effect.

It's something worth a look. I have not seen anything like it and it's free. If you have time to take a stroll in the evening after dark it's like of cool.

Beautiful monument and fountain to the Veteran's who served our country during WW II who hailed from the great state of South Dakota...it depicts all branches of the service to include a WAC/WAVE all saluting their respective flags and those of the state of South Dakota and the US flag. It was extra special to me as the Marine aviator was my great uncle, Joe Foss, who was a Medal of Honor winner, is the #1 Marine Ace of WW II, former Governor of South Dakota...and the list goes on, quite an accomplished man and I am proud to call him family! Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and don't forget to visit the Capitol building, too!

Loved the life sized statues representing all branches of military service. The fountain is an artesian well, and the natural sulphur in it - well, it should have been flaming, but wasn't. A bit disappointing, but a nice tribute to veterans everywhere.

Located on the Capitol grounds, the Flaming Fountain is a natural gas fountain that feeds into the Capitol Lake. Many geese and other fowl live right in this park as well. There are several memorials to see as you walk about the fountain and lake area. A Local Staple.

I grew up in Pierre so I've seen the fountain burning many a time but usually lately it has not been lit. I know the winds are fierce here in SD so I assume that is why it isn't lit. However if it isn't lit there really is no charm. It smells terrible which is why it can burn.
