We saw Mt St Helen's one day and had to go to this on the next day. What great fun it was to go down into the cave and walk through the tunnels. You need lights or headlamps and sweatshirts. We went when it was warm outside but the caves are always cold - so go prepared. If you have enough time take the short drive to Lava Canyon right up the road. What a beautiful area to hike.

Very cool experience. I brought my 10 year old 5 year old, and 3 year old; they all had a blast. Bring warm clothes and an extra flashlight.

We walked the upper cave - or rather walked/climbed/ scrambled. Took about 3 hours but that was with photos stops (many of them!). Its very cold so take extra layers of clothing. Hiking boots are a good idea, and a flashlight essential as it is pitch darkIt is an awesome adventure and I would do it again one day

This is a full day activity if you hike both the upper and lower chambers. The lower chamber is a good 1+ hour walk to the end and back and the upper chamber is a challenging 2+ hour scramble and climb and leap to the end. Both chambers are cold so wear a coat or sweater (5 degrees Celsius). The upper chamber really needs good shoes as the boulders are precarious to climb. We rented the gas lanterns at the info centre for $5 each and they worked just fine but if we do it again, having headlamps would make the upper chamber that much easier. We entered the upper chamber from the same entrance as the lower chamber and reached an 8 foot flat wall of rock that we were able to climb thanks to a group of young men who were helping pull people up. If they hadn't been there, we may have had to turn back. It may be easier to enter at the other entrance at the end of the path and then to just have to slip down the wall. We'll try that next time!I recommend leaving your camera in your car for the upper chamber. I would have smashed mine on the rocks trying to climb over them. Don't do the upper chamber if you have small children!

We walked the Lower Cave (easy) on a 90 degree day. It was 42 degrees in the cave so make sure you bring cold weather clothing. The ground is very jagged and un-level I suggest Hiking Boots with full foot and Ankle support. And last suggestion, get a headlight with the highest Lumens you can find. You don't want to think cheap with your light in a cave! Ape Cave was a great experience so take time stop and look at where you are. Have fun!!
