EveMcGuire -Thank you so much for the feedback and glad you had a nice visit to the World Famous Queen Mary. We have a very busy special events schedule - posted on our website - please refer to that before booking your stay. The ship was built in the 1930's when sound insulation was unheard of (pardon the pun!). In addition, The Queen Mary was designed to be at sea and with that came a lot of noise as the engines had a definite pulse to them as the turbines whirled 1000 RPM. The propeller cavitation could also be noticed as a very slight vibration, but it was the boilers that made the most noise. The lower in the ship you went, the more heat and noise was noticed. In the boiler rooms, it was impossible to communicate by speaking because of the ear-splitting noise. To the passengers and crew in most areas of the ship the sound of the Queen Mary was a cacophony of boilers, generators, fans and turbines blended into one glorious interpretation of the sheer power and majesty required to move one of the worlds largest and fastest liners across the sea. This noise would cancel out all noise from adjoining rooms. No longer at sea, we do get feedback like this from time to time when the ship is extremely busy. We continue to look for ways to insulate our rooms more but have not found a way without affecting the infrastructure of the ship which is off limits because of its historic nature. Please do note that we offer complementary ear plugs at the front desk to all of our guests and that we have signage through out the ship asking guests to keep the noise to a minimum.
