Wildcat Canyon is a great place for hiking. Experience great sunset views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate, hike the San Pablo Ridge easterly towards Orinda with views of the canyon and the El Cerrito and Berkeley ridges. One can also hike the canyon floor, where the Hayward fault traverses the canyon following the base of the sheer slope below El Cerrito and Berkeley. Geologically fascinating..where the next "big one" is predicted! Along the San Pablo Ridge above the San Pablo reservoir you'll come to the highest peak and the remains of a cold war radar facility that supported a nearby Nike Missile facility with it battery of underground missile silos! Not much to see now, but just imagining the activities that abounded here when we feared a Soviet attack from the Pacific. And, for wildlife lovers you may come upon a pack of coyotes as I did....not to mention deer and grazing cattle (do cows qualify as wildlife?). I highly recommend this for locals and visitors alike. If you're just passing through, drive to the end of Bonita Drive, park and take a very short and easy walk to incredible views of San Francisco, the bay and the Golden Gate...best on a clear crisp day. Another popular access point is the end of Clark Road in El Sobrante. This trail head is a moderate climb up to the San Pablo Ridge through tree-studded grazing land.

This is another beautiful spot, right in the middle of the East Bay, enhancing life for Richmond, San Pablo, El Sobrante and Berkeley Residents.Being an urban park, It is of easy access with several parking spots in each of the cities named above. It is multi use, including horses. It connects to several regional parks making it a varied and challenging hike or ride. Oh, and its free!It is not designed with picnics in mind, but because it connects to several parks that are (Kennedy Grove, Tilden etc.) and you are ambitious in your hike/ride, this should not deter you.Fellow Residents of Richmond! Look around you and appreciate this beautiful place, all within reach and at no cost to you. Enjoy it!

I used to take my dogs there years ago, but no more. Too many signs. No more horses - before you could walk among them! It's OK for a quick hike, but there's nicer, handier places nearby.

This park is what Tilden park would be without the carousel, farm, lakes, and crowds of people. It's much less developed, with few roads and only a few small picnic areas (that are popular with locals for birthday and other parties). There are restrooms and drinking fountains only at the Avarado staging area, so bring plenty of water. There are often cattle grazing, so there is also cow poop to step over, but if you stick to the paved road/trail you won't run into them. This park actually connects to Tilden through a connector trail, if you are into long hikes.

Long dirts roads and trails, both level and steep. Great for hiking, trail running, biking and horseback riding. Beautiful canyons and long distance views. It can get impractical for foot traffic in wet winters. Accessible from Richmond at McBride Ave, from the Berekley Hills in ElCerrito, and by road from Berkeley to Tilden Park. Trails connect from Richmond on the north, to Little Lake and Inspiration Point in Tilden Park, on the south end.

Wildcat Canyon has beautiful trails throughout the East Bay hills. You can go on the main trail or take other trails up the hills with spectacular views. Great for walking. Dogs are allowed off leash outside of picnic areas and parking lots. Sometimes the trails go through pastures with grazing cattle. There is bountiful wildlife (deer, owls, turkeys, etc.).

An extensive park going from Richmond hills all the way to Berkeley ,with rolling hills, a seasonal stream, oak trees, coyotes, red tail hawks, and fantastic views. It is great for both walking and biking This is one of the best kept secrets in the Bay Area. Try it first from the Richmond hills entrance in late afternoon, and make sure that you take the high road on the top of the hill crest at least once. This is a sacred place.
