I'll likely never make it to Japan but I felt as if I had while participating in the traditional tea ceremony at this beautiful little jem. The tea house is surrounded by gorgeous traditional gardens and landscaping and inside features both large and small tea ceremony rooms. A volunteer provides an introduction and describes the process, staff and assistants perform the tea ceremony in full dress. After having tea this way I went out and bought myself the tools to approximate the experience at home. Really an exceptional place and a fine thing to discover in the heart of the mid-west.

Certain times of the year there are celebrations held there. Tea ceremonies and Ikebana. A very relaxing place.

A quiet, relaxing garden and house. This gets 5 stars if there is an event goIng on, but just 3 stars otherwise. The house is only open on Thursdays unless some program or ceremony is happening. The gardens are beautiful, with gravel paths, so not great for walkers or wheelchairs. Very relaxing way to spend some quiet time. Surrounded by the Hartley gardens, an idea garden created by Master Gardeners, and the UI arboretum. Gardeners and nature lovers can easily spend a couple hours here.

Japan House is beautifully landscaped and tranquil. Check the schedule to participate in a tea ceremony (cost involved).

Beautiful place, nice to take a walk, to ride a bike or to have a different afternoon with friends. I recommend.

Worth the trip. Very broadening cultural experience. Treasure to the community. Located near the Arboretum in a scenic area.

We went there most recently to witness an event that featured drummers on Japanese drums playing in synchrony. It was a wonderful experience that resonated in ways more than one. Check their calendars often and don't miss the springtime Cherry blossom event. Very friendly staff.

It is a beautiful, calm place. There are some activities about Japanese culture if you are interested in it. I guess the winters in urbana champaing are way to cold to appreciate the lovely atmosphere of the gardens but in summer is realllllly nice !!!

This is a little gem of a traditional tea house and garden set in the middle of a larger park. Tranquil, and serene, you approach through an allée of cherry trees, and it only gets better from there.

i went to one of the tea ceremonies back in March. This is a must do if you are ever in this area!!! If you want a taste of Japan, this is it! The people were so gracious, as most people are here in central illinois. BUt this is a special kind of nice. Being a buddhist myself, i know the real thing when i see it and feel it. i treasure my experience there and hope that others go feel and see it too. They have lovely grounds and a zen garden in front.
