Normally, when I was in Kotor for a day or two, that summer 2009, I had planned to go to the walls of this beautiful city. Those walls go almost completely around the core of the city.Only from the inland side, the town is sheltered by the high massive cliffs of the neighbouring mountains. One of the mountains is very renown Lovcen.In fact ,as in the cases of other old european medieval cities, these walls played the role of the fortification of the city, containing ramparts,towers,citadels,gates,bastions, forts,cisterns and a castle(St.John Castle). Here, through the history, the different peoples left their knowledge about the military architecture, as Illyricum, Byzantium, Venice and Austria. Peculiarly, the Venetians rather distinguish in such works, concerning the defending buildings and structures.No wonder after all, that mentioned fortification objects entered on the list of the World Heritage Sites.I made at that time one strenous climbing up the walls, towards the surrounding mountains. The stairs had not been paved and are very steep, so when You decide on such hiking, be careful. It took me no less than hour to get to the top of the walls. But it was worth of it, since from the highest point of this upward trail, You really have a splendid view on the Kotor far below You, as from some point of bird view.You can see in this manner, Bay of Kotor at south-west, the river Skurda on the north, mountain of St.John towards the East.Really unforgettable.

We did a day trip to Montenegro from Dubrovnik. It’s worth spending the day there. It has its own uniqueness, with the walls going up the mountains. Be careful hiking up though. The stairs are not paved and steep so it would be a challenge.

While staying in Cavtat nr Dubrovnik we drove to Kotor. once you get across the border (no problem) you soon drive along the side of the water . kotor is in the far distance across this inland sea and following the coastline you come to a port with a ferry. Take the ferry or drive on, both are for kotor.we took the ferry and crossed the water to the other side (very good views of kotor on way into town) and then after our visit came back following the shore line on the other side of the lake.In effect we drove a huge circle round the water but its a nice way to see more.The town itself is interesting and nicely kept and the locals friendly. Also (amazingly) cheaper than Croatia.Unlike Dubrovnik the walk on the walls is behind the town going steeply up the mountain and the views from the top are excellent. So if you want a circit round the walls like Dubrovnik its not that but if you want a nice city to visit, with lots of places to eat and have the energy to walk up the mountain its good. Note though that the paths are rough and not like the film set walls in Dubrovnik.An excellent day out.

Have seen some mixed reviews below however maybe I was lucky but we saw shooting stars and star gazed for some time. I went in August and the heat was 34c in the day, we happen to stumble to the entrance after dinner at Scorpio restaurant. To reach the very top it takes about 1hr, we did this at around 9pm pitch dark but assisted with a torch, there is no real ground, steep, high, narrow steps. At some point it was just loose rock, I did it flip flops and no water as it was unexpected, don't make that mistake. During the day you have to pay but after 8pm there is no charge. It's a great find and if you are lucky to see shooting stars it will stay a memory forever.It's not great for photography unless you do a whole tripod and 30sec exposure setup, it's just one that has to be remembered in your head.Well worth the walk!!

Nothing extra special, ordinary old sea city. It is not beautiful as Dubrovnik, but it is still worth to be seen.

A walk around this stunning walled city is well worth doing. Not a difficult walk. Interesting shops, cafes and bars.

A little bit treacherous to hike up in the rain but well worth the view. As others have said make sure to take water with you is about a 2 mile hike up the stairs. Make sure to take pictures at some of the various turn abouts, were a bit more picturesque of the the town below than the view you could get at the top. Would recommend doing, wear good sneakers and plan timing accordingly as the path is NOT lit for a safe hike down.

After reading some reviews we expected a strenuous uphill, so we chose a cloudy morning.The narrow stairs were maintained well making easy to climb up. Wild flowers on the path were pretty and a view was getting better, the more we climbed to the top. (We walk at least 2 miles on a daily basis at home; unfortunately no hills nor mountains nearby.)If you are not young and fit, just avoid a hot sunny day. It is really nice to walk around.

ROTIP

You can walk front side of the main town walls. Free! Excellent views but not very long. Check out the drawbridge at the very end. The fortress walls behind the town are much longer and the walk is much harder but worth the effort.

I read about this online before I came here, as I was on a cruise I only came here for a day so I wanted to fit as much in as possible! I highly recommend the city wall walk, it is tiring but the views are worth it, make sure you wear comfy footwear. It cost around 5 minutes to walk up. Make sure you bring water, if not then on the way up and at the top there is a man selling cold bottled water! When you get to the top you can see everything and it is beautiful. Highly recommend.
