Along with my father and elderly grandfather I visited the VSM for National Steam Train Day in May 2014. It was a great, well organised day despite the rainy weather! Firstly, it was easily accessible as the steam trains arrive and depart from the NS railway station in Apeldoorn, so we arrived on the train from Schiphol and just walked across. There was something different to see all day, from several steam trains carrying passengers up and down between Apeldoorn, Beekbergen and Loenen all day, to a demonstration freight train to see, to the (very) large collection of locomotives at the Beekbergen site, the staff in traditional attire, the turntable, the museum... It would be excellent for kids and for those of any age who like trains. There was food and drink on site, too, which was reasonably priced and of a good quality. Would definitely visit again.

Beautifull steamtrain doing several rides a day, leaving from its own platform at the Apeldoorn trainstation. A treat for all trainlovers, and a wonderfull trip for families and children of all ages.

We stayed in the area (Beekbergen), and had seen the train several times while hiking. So, we decided to have a look from within the train as well. It's a great way to spend a few hours. We started at Beekbergen, went to Eerbeek (unfortunately, no trip to Dieren on that particular day), then back to Beekbergen where we had a 45-minute stop, and a chance to look all trains on the yard and in the depot. Then, as a last leg of the trip, we went to Apeldoorn and back to Beekbergen. If you don't have Apeldoorn as startingpoint or endpoint, then... you can safely skip this leg of the trip. It is the least attractive of all. Beekbergen -- Eerbeek: beautiful. Beekbergen -- Apeldoorn: so-so...

The VSM has a lot of steam-locomotives. Especially during the "Terug Naar Toen" you'll see plenty of steam action; 30+ steam-trains pr day saturday and sunday. Nowhere else in the world do you get to set that many steamtrains with 48 hours. Worth not only a detour but worth a trip in-itself.

Easy interchange from Apeldoorn railway station. A main line loco in the form of a German Class 52. Preserved Dutch coaches. An good collection of locomotives at the depot at Eerbeek. Note that the full length of the line to Dieren is not covered every operating day.

Pleasant ride between Apeldoorn to Dierent and return. Reasonable prices in the buffet car. Lots of wood pannelling in some coaches.

We did lik the "round trip" - train to Dieren - boat from Dieren to Zutphen - "normal" train from Zutphen back to Apeldoorn.
