Beautiful half-wild park in the middle of a very urbanized part of Scotland near Glasgow. It is large; you will need at least 2-3 hours to walk most, but not all tracks. Unfortunately the traffic noise from the nearby motorway is quite intrusive in some parts. Nice riverside walk, a few lakes-wild fowl reserve with observation points, privately owned and not accessible(pity) Dalzell house-19th century baronial residence, which is nevertheless a major focal point, somewhat neglected Japanese garden and arboretum, shaded brooks whisper in deep ravines. The woodland is particularly attractive in the spring when trees, bluebells and other flowers are in bloom, their fragrance in the air along with the tweeter and chirping of all sorts of singing birds. It is however, what I said- a half wild parkland, not a manicured NT property. To the point that there are no toilets there(!) nor the all-important tea/coffee room. That is decidedly very non-British. Well, you can’t have everything all the time. And the entry is free.

This place is sensational. Natural woodland walks; Japanese garden; riverside tracks by the Clyde; hides to view wildlife. Unspoiled. The estate manor is not accessible as it is apartment dwellings. A discreet cafe would be a great addition. Didn't find any toilet facilities!

Great place to walk the dogs. Always quiet and lovely setting. Watch out for horses though. The house is private so you cant get into it

Fantastic building, great Japanese gardens as well as beautiful country side walks. Very peaceful. I stayed here for 5 years and loved wakening up every morning in the beautiful surroundings.

I just found this site, and when I visited it was the boys' school. But I'll back up. I am a Dalzell, American. Back in the early 50's my family was apprised of the estate having to be sold. We are a pretty small family, and I remember this family pow wow, with everyone present, including the children. They tried to figure out how to re-patriate it back into the family, while continuing to run the family business, a Marine Towing Company in New York City, as well as several other lesser ones. No one could figure out how to purchase it without selling all the properties owned by various family members, and worse how to maintain it thereafter. Later, in the middle 60s, as a young bride, my husband and I travelled to Scotland on holiday, so of course we went to Motherwell. It was summertime, and we simply showed up! It was the Boys' School then and we were warmly greeted by the headmaster who invited us in for tea, and a great impromptu tour! It is absolutely gorgeous, my favorite thing being the enormous carving of the family crest over the huge fireplace in, I think the library. We also had a tour of the gardens, noting the pair of evergreens honoring a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, which graced the entrance to the lower gardens. I have photos of all of it. It was a heady visit for sure. The headmaster served us tea and biscuits, and we chatted for quite a while. I'll never forget it. Diane Dalzell Cooper

Im a student at Motherwell College and ive walked down the estate with a carer from stewart Hall of residence, she took me down to the house and told me that it was really old and now has been turned into apartments. I looked up dalzell estate on the internet and found really interesting information about the house and the estate. I love the scenery its lovely to walk down there. Me and the carer resently went down there to collect conkers which was good. it was a lovely and relaxing walk.Its really peaceful and you can walk down and nobody will bother you. I have seen the garden of the house and the carer told me that in the olden days woman went along in their really long dresses and in horse and carts. Its really good that they made more use of the building as its a very famous house and it would be ashame to knock some famous building FROM STACEY CONLEY, STEWART HALL MOTHERWELL COLLEGE

Having tried to view the beautifull terraced gardens at Dalzell house, but unfortunately, not being wealthy enough to own a flat there, I know from experience that visitors are no longer welcome, at or near Dalzell house, unless of course you are filming a "desireable homes" television programme, and not merely interested in Motherwell heritage. The surrounding woodlands are however the perfect setting for a quiet summer walk, but if it's heritage your interested in I would recomend a visit to the Motherwell Heritage Centre where you can read up on Dalzell house, in the days before it was sold for a penny, to the big money men.

Fantastic place to own a flat - as I do. It's actually in Motherwell, and not hamilton as you suggest.

Dalzell House is actually privately owned apartments, converted around 15 years ago. The surrounding parkland is open to the public. I know because I own oneof the apartments, and we have great parties! As for the ghosts - I believe they do exist but haven't seen any yet.
