we went here on the 7th March 2015, big site, folk museum is very good for taking you back in time, loved the period costumes & the cinema was showing a Charlie Chaplin film, very funny, nice walks around the estate into the country side, you can even take your dog! We also went round the transport museum which was lovely, great old tram, trains fire engines etc & a titanic exhibition, one of the exhibits is closed atm for upgrading, allow a whole day there to do it justice maybe take a picnic, although they have a cafe!

Recently visited the Ulster Folk Museum with friends from the UK. I know there are no guarantees with the weather but we were all fortunate in a cool, crisp and clear morning with the sun shining.Situated off the A2 along the Belfast to Bangor road near to Holywood, this charming setting is packed full of surprises. Within its boundaries it contains cottages, farms, shops, a school, bank and a Police Station from 100 years ago.Meet with members of staff wearing periodic costumes and demonstrating bygone skills of weaving, metal and wood working, textile spinning and many more. All are happy to spend time explaining their crafts and how they would have been used all those years ago - fascinating!A voluntary member of staff attends most days to provide transport around the facilities allowing time for exploration and very knowledgeable of the history of each building. We did not see him on this visit as he tends to appear in the afternoons.It's a great way to exercise and there are animals on site which makes a great day out for the kids.We spent the morning walking around and exploring the different places. If you want to grab a light bite to eat or maybe a hot drink, drop in to one of the tea rooms which offer friendly family surroundings. In there take advantage of a selection of teas, coffees and light snacks. From what I could see it is informally set out, with plenty of room for wheelchair users.If you want something to remember the day by, try a visit to their souvenir shop (as our friends did).There are savings to be made so I would advise checking out the website www.nmni.com/uftm for further details. If you are able to make a day of it you could visit both! For example, this facility caters for groups visits of 15 or more and such a visit would attract a discount on entry.If you fancy a great morning out drop in and pay them a visit. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised as you 'Step back in time'!

My husband and I brought our 2 children here yesterday (21 feb 2015). Our daughter is 8 and our son is 4 and both of them thoroughly enjoyed their day at the transport museum. My husband and I didn't realise that we would be permitted to board some of the old trains or that we would be able to participate in activities. Although the sea, Sky and land exhibition were closed for maintenance we still enjoyed our day. Educational but fun.

Spent the day here with four kids under 7 and they had a ball! Wide variety of houses and lifestyles to learn about firsthand and see the past in action! Children really enjoyed it! Lots of walking in the rural area so young kids bring a buggy. V nice guides, (one v nice police man whol told us all about the history of the barracks). Note of warning with kids - go to the sweet shop at the end or you ll be tortured! Def worth a visit, highly recommend it, v professionally done and authentic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip down memory lane. Marvellous selection of period properties covering every aspect of urban and rural life in bygone years. I look forward to the day when it is a totally "living" attraction, as in Scandanavian countries viz Stockholm where, for example, an whole island, with transport being horse/cart and the bakery etc run as going concerns thus giving an authentic history of the lifestyle of the period in time. UFTM are getting there with the likes of the cinema and enacted "street scenes etc but some work still needs to be done to make it less of an exhibition, in places, of rural and urban life. Well done for what you have achieved and good luck for all improvements you may wish to undertake.

Good for the history and a nice day doing something outside a good laugh posing for pics at the old cars and busses and in the old houses very well done only go on a dry day as there is little cover

We had a lovely day here in September with our Border Collie. We only went to the Folk part of the museum but it was incredibly interesting (especially the byre dwelling) & it was lovely to walk around - very peaceful. But for us it was the staff at the museum which made our day, from start to finish you could not fault their friendliness and helpfulness. We'd particularly like to mention Big Davey at the farm who took time to chat to us and show us around the farm house, the Blacksmith in the forge was also very interesting (he even let us have a go on the bellows) and there was a gentleman in the town who took time to chat to us on the street. Overall a brilliant museum to visit, I would highly recommend it & we very much look forward to returning for another visit when we're next in Ireland! From Alix & Karl (from Beamish).

Visited just the Folk Museum part of this attraction with 5 friends. Wonderful reflection of past Ulster life as the museum has a village comprising buildings dismantled and transported from various parts of Ulster and reconstructed. There's an amazing variety ranging from labourers' one-ups / one-downs and two-ups and two-downs, through a carpenter's shop, a bicycle repair shop, a coal merchants, a bank complete with luxurious manager's accommodation, to an agricultural area with several mills and farms. Indeed, at one a sow had given birth recently and there were 11 tiny piglets to coo over. Although there's a cafe with light refreshments several staff at various properties had been baking soda farls over an open fire. So there were many opportunities for tasty snacks.

Having many good memories of visiting the museums when I was very young, I was quite keen to go back again recently. It certainly did not disappoint!The Folk Museum is very interesting, although I would recommend going in summer as there is a lot of wandering around outside! The Transport Museum is equally as good, although unfortunately part of it was closed off for maintenance when we visited. As that was the case, though, we were not charged for entry in to the Transport Museum because of this, which was a kind gesture.
