My family visited this zoo twice alrady. parents went there last year and they took me with them this year because they were very impressed by what they had seen last summer. There are sides to see as in every thing, of course. Let's start from positives: lots of different animals and birds for both children and adults to learn about and enjoy. Each type of animal has an information attached to a cage or other enclosure they are in. The staff was very friendly and willing to communicate when we had any interest (I didn't notice/miss English because I am Lithuanian). Prices are low, definitely worth the entertainment. You can get a free colorful booklet at the ticket office (remember to ask for it!).Animals look healthier, nicer and in general happier than in some state zoos. Where possible= safe, visitors could come to wooden fences/railings and pat or feed animals. When buying tickets, visitors are given plastic buckets with white bread in case they want to feed animals. Some animals and birds even walked free among people. The more dangerous or smaller animals were behing a single or even double wire fence, which can be seen as a plus- it adds safety for visitors and lets animals breathe or a minus- obscures a view, especially for photographers with big cameras. Same could be said about dense trees or bushes in some cages- heaven for certain sorts of animals, an obstacle for visitors who imagine that animals should be displayed "on the plate". Forest animals, like whild cats were feeling really happy under the branches. Zoo also serves as a rescue place for abandones/stray dogs until they find new homes. We were visiting by the end of the day on saturday and happened to get into a "rush hough" when a bus of tourists with handicaped children and several private cars arrived almost at the same time. It didn't cause any big problems at the ticket box or walking around the zoo. Everyone seemed to be happy and enjoying the visit. There is a nice photo gallery on the zoo's website, showing lots of animals they have. Things that could be better:Directiions and road marking sure could be improved. Getting both to the zoo and out of it is very tricky. My dad had driven there last year but we still got lost and had to ask directions in the village on the way to the zoo and got out onto a busy highway in the wrong place (no right turn allowed, no way to go to the left lane for the left turn either). Traffic signs are not zoo's responsibility but they still should try to get the road marked better. The territory is packed with cages, yards, ponds and narrow passages. In some places it feels like you're in the fenced maze. We didn't get lost but some cages are so far behind others that can be missed, and they are sure worth visiting! Playful racoons, colorful long haired and short haired guinea pigs and rabbits are more than happy to meet you there (make sure you don't dive all breads to camels, apakas, goats, geese, swans etc. you meet before). I wasn't excited seeing cows and wolves living on cement "floor". I am sure there was a rational reason for that but it looked unnatural for those species. There were a lot of "cow cakes" on that cement floor. Not too atractive. Glass of the squirrel room could certainly use some cleaning. It was hard to see these live animals running around through the dirty glass.Zoos webpage has no English info.Even under "working hours" it says: "Information is available in Lithuanian". That's certainly is not good- for the zoo itself first of all. The staff doesn't answer questions sent by email, although there is a "contact us" e-mail address on the website. Photo gallery on the website could have the names of animal species next to the photos. We were visiting at the end of the day and more interested in animals than the facilities, so I didn't notice if there was a bar/restaurant and public bathrooms available. I noticed only an icecream/snack kiost at the entrance/exit, and the nice thing next to it were 2 water stations for visitors to wash their hands after patting the animals. Very rustic, oldfashioned "mashines" but still better than dirty hands. Hand sanitariser wouldbe a great addition.I've been in many zoos while traveling, mainly in big state zoos. This was my first small zoo, and I can say it's quite well maintained. Sure, it needs some "fixing" and all available suppport from animal lovers but don't all other zoos do? Would I recommend this place tgo others- of course, I would. If you can do anything to help them to improve animals' conditions- even better.

Me and my boyfriend went there in June. It costs 20 LT for 2 person so not really expensive. The staff did not speak English and everything about the animals was written in LT or Russian. There were a lot of construction going on in the zoo so it was a little shabby. It was really dirty and they clearly don't take good care of lot of the animals. The animals were not kept in a glass but had like 2-4 layers of wire instead and honestly I didn't think it was trustworthy and you couldn't see much through them. The only thing that I actually liked about it was the animals that were loose in the zoo, just walking behind you with no care in the world ;)It is probably ok for families but I would not take my kids there.
