Plan to spend the day. Our tour guide, on our escorted 12 day trip to Lithuania, took some liberties to honor a not so unified request, and our arrival was delayed, so we did not see as much as we had hoped to do. The Lithuanian country life open-air museum contains dwelling houses and commerce buildings transferred from the 5 different regions of Lithuania. The buildings are grouped in complexes: farmsteads, small villages, and towns. They represent the most characteristic features, construction, and decorative elements of buildings of different eras and social status. They also show authentic fences, gardens, beehive, monumental features. 51 buildings with displays of furniture, clothing, kitchen items, tools, etc. In a recreated town (think Williamsburg, Virginia, USA) they have buildings to demonstrate making clay pots, processing amber, wood, metal, weaving, and a great bookstore, to include English for some books. The church is wonderful - all wood and smells heavenly. There is a recreated authentic Lithuanian tavern near the Zemaitija sector on a picturesque coast of Kaunas Lagoon. Items include a large variety of traditional hot dishes, salads, snacks, drinks, desserts and there is a tearoom with traditional Lithuanian hot snacks, salads, drinks, desserts, too. Near the Tavern is a lookout tower which you climb to view the countryside to include the large body of water nearby.

Choose a dry day for a trip to this wonderful open air museum. A series of reconstructed genuine historical buildings are set in several acres of countryside. It is a great place to take a picnic and it makes a cheap family day out. Children can learn about history. There are spaces for them to run around without disturbing other visitors. It is quite spread out and some of the paths are rough so there is a good bit of walking. It would also make a good day out for adults who are interested in history and old buildings.

Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum is located some 20 km outside Kaunas. When you get there you can see how people of Lithuania lived many years ago. All houses there are authentic brought there from different regions of the country. If the weather is fine you'll have a lot of fun there.
