We enjoyed having chosen Riquerwihr for our base of exploration of the Alsace smaller villages. Not only because Riquerwihr is near most of other Alsacian villages, but also because the Old Town, where the Christmas Market takes place, is very pleasant.

Well, if you are thinking of visiting Riquewihr, the old walled village is what you are coming to see. This is the Alsatian version of Rothenberg a.d. Tauber in miniature. The place oozes history with many half timber framed buildings and the remaining moat and gates. I enjoyed the back alleys more than the main street, but all is worth a visit. The town definitely has the feel of times long past.I was there during the Christmas market and it was extremely busy, but the crowds were well mannered and festive. The decorated shops were quite pleasant. Prices were high, particularly restaurants and wine bars, but it IS a tourist town.I enjoyed my time here, even with the crowds, and noise. I would go out of my way to visit again, if I found myself in the area. I think a more leisurely exploration without the Christmas market crowds might yield some real treasures. I was told that the place is VERY busy all year, particularly on weekends. One couple in my party report that one restaurant refused service after initially welcoming them after finding out they spoke only English. I can't verify this but it seems many places in France not particularly welcoming to Americans. I spoke broken German while in town and had no such issues. I only mention this as I cannot guarantee it is English speaking tourist friendly.

We visited this wonderful small village in December 2014 and were lucky enough to find that all the Christmas markets were still open and the shops covered in decorations. It turned dark around 4-0pm and the place looked spectacular with all the lights and decorations on show. The hot chestnuts and mulled wime really put the finishing touches to a wonderful visit. Would recommend a visit and any time during the year.

Like I said on the title, this is a little and beautiful small village which deserver a stop of about 3 hours. It is a charming spot and I took a time to have lunch at a restaurant which I do not remember it's name. This is a touristy city and maybe it must be avoided on summer time.

Another small fortified village on the wine route in the Alsace. It consists on one mean street who goes from one gate to another, this for about more or less 400 meters, and near the second gate when you are going downhill the mean street you have the restaurant in which we had diner, called the Tavern de Alsace, small but really to recommend for people who do not want to spend much time in a restaurant when visiting. It is a very well-known old town, and indeed very nice to have a walk in.The problem is to find a parking for the car why the village is car-free.But never the less we loved our visit and would return right away.

Walking around the Old Town of Riqwhir feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The half timber and colorful houses are very quaint. Take note of the Dolder fountain which was used to measure the capacity of wine barrels. There are restaurants ( more than 30) and various shops to cater to tourists. While the town is touristique, one should visit it. The whole place is well preserved from medieval times. We used Riquewihr as a base to explore other towns in Alsace over the weekend. Today, we covered 4 towns- Ribeauville, Hunawhir, Ksysersberg and Eguisheim which are all nearby. Tomorrow we plan to go to Obernai and Mont Saint Odile before returning to Geneva.

This city center was smaller than we had thought but so wonderful. Its streets and shops were such a nice way to enjoy the day. It is so well preserved. All around this little town are vineyards which only add the scenery. We came here in an off season with almost no other tourist which made it even more special as everyone was speaking the native French.

Such a lovely town, vineyard, cheese & many more. I just couldn't get enough during my last visit. Surely will come back again.
