The St Peter Abbey of Solosmes, is very close to Sable Sur Sarthe and about 20kms from Le Mans. There is parking close by to this imposing Abbey. As a visitor you only have access to the Church and a small part of the gardens and the shop. The church has wonderful stain glass windows. There is a wonderful bridge over the river which gives you a good view of the back of the Abbey and you can also walk around the Abbey by the river. This is a very serene town and well worth a visit.

This is stepping back in time. Beautiful singing by the monks in a superb setting. The church is also worth a thorough look as it contains some wonderful carving.

We went to Solesmes as part of a large group, there was a presentation in French ( we were with a French group), which unfortunately passed over our heads somewhat. We are told that the Gregorian chants are magnificent but we didn't actually stay to hear a service. However, the abbey was superb with huge and intricate carvings depicting religious scenes. No matter your religious beliefs, these carvings are worth seeing! There was a large ' souvenir' shop which would particularly be of interest to Roman Catholics with a very large collection of books looking at a wide range of subjects, from a catholic perspective ( I assume).

The Abbey and attached church provide a contrast between the magnificent and the simple. The Abbey looks huge from the river side, and the acoustics produce a moving experience when the Monks perform their chants.

Situé face au grand hôtel, cet établissement est beau et impressionnant. La visite de l'abbaye (à l'intérieure) est à faire absolument, vous serez "scotché" par les statues religieuses.

Une église magnifique avec des sculptures en marbre très impressionnantes. Un beau lieu de culte et de culture situé au bord de la Sarthe. Une jolie boutique avec une maquette des bâtiments et des explications historiques.Si vous souhaitez assister aux vèpres (chants grégoriens chantés tous les jours par les moines de l'Abbaye), vous serez les bienvenus.Accueil simple et chaleureux

Andiamo apposta a solesmes per ascoltare il canto gregoriano nella sede più appropriata....l abbazia , penso sia indispensabile fermarsi per ascoltare un canto(dura circa un quarto d ora e viene ripetuto più volte al giorno) e' un emozione grandissima,ti sembra di tornare al Medioevo. Vale una deviazione,che noi facciamo puntualmente ogni volta che si va in Normandia o Bretagna.

L'abbaye elle-même est magnifique surtout de côté du pont. Mais à l'intérieur seulement l'église est accessible. Donc il faut venir le matin ou le soir pour le service pour écouter le chant des moines.
