refuge is a sanctuaries for any animal that has been abandoned. They take care of the animals and recreate a safe environment for them. It s a nice place to bring your kids

This place is not a usual zoo. It is rather a sanctuary that takes care of animals abandoned,withdrawn from their owners or being treated. You can see monkeys, snakes, tigers, etc... Just like in a real zoo in the beautiful French countryside. It is very pedagogical as it shows to children (and adults) that animals are not toys and a real responsibility to assume if you decide to adopt one. I go to this place every time I come back to France to chateau Gontier with my three children. They love it and... So do I !

It is tired looking and some of the animals were not in the best condition which was sad to see. However the organisation claims that it is serving a good cause, so in that respect we wanted to support it. If going with young kids, buy the overpriced, salt free, butter free, taste free popcorn to feed to the animals. It is the only thing you are allowed to feed them, but it will double the joy of the visit for almost any kid.

Great place which can restore your Faith in humanity. The children loved giving the animals popcorn. The toilets and picnic benches were clean and well maintained.

We opted to visit the Refuge de L'Arche as the other zoo's were a bit too far. We were told that it was a bit of a farm with a few animals where you could purchase pop corn to feed the tennants. It turned out to be a really special day and the kids were absolutely mesmerised by feeding the many birds and monkeys with pop corn.Ok, so it doesn't have gorillas or crocodiles but the variety of animals on view was still impressive. A must see if visiting the area.

This isn't a zoo, so don't expect fancy animal enclosures etc. It is an animal rescue centre and offers a safe home for many animals and birds rescued from all over Europe. The stories of the animals' lives before they came here can be very sad, so be prepared to be moved.

This is a 40 acre park given over to "waifs & strays" of the animal kingdm. Many have been unwanted "pets" that have outgrown their homes. It is just outside Chateau-Gontier in the Mayenne region between Laval and Angers.If you want to fully enjoy it then allow yourself plenty of time and pick a sunny day.

This centre isn't smart, like a commercial zoo, but they have a wide range of animals they have rescued from various terrible situations and some of the rescue stories are amazing.

A chaque fois que les petits-enfants sont là en vacances, on partage avec bonheur leur émerveillement dans la (re)découverte des animaux accueillis par l'équipe du Refuge... Le projet de rénovation est attendu avec impatience, pour une signalétique adaptée et lisible, même par les plus jeunes. Ils ont tellement soif de découverte!...

Nous avons passé près de quatre heures dans ce refuge remarquablement entretenu : tous les enclos sont spacieux et les abris des animaux sont propres, dans les volières le sable au sol était ratissé et les animaux visibles (quelques uns dorment à l'intérieur dans la journée comme les chouettes, les lions et d'autres) paraissent en parfaite santé malgré les handicaps physiques de certains. Le personnel d'entretien ne ménage pas sa peine. Rien à voir avec un zoo ... L'endroit est calme, verdoyant, très vaste et paisible.
