We had a guided tour with a badly speaking English guide who was had to understand. The tour only visited four rooms in this large Chateau. The tour ended with a boring visit to a biscuit museum. The only saving grace was a small taste of their wine and biscuits.

Interesting guided tour (in French) with an enthusiastic guide. the butterfly place is fantastic and the LU museum an essential part of Nantes history. The château looks fantastic and there are nice walks around it. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon spent with family.

I have visited this lovely Chateau twice, once maybe 20 years ago, and again in July 2013. We took the 'full' tour - visiting the castle itself (guide spoke French only but this is France after all!), then we looked around the biscuit museum, then into the tasting room/shop for a tasting of some wines (bought a couple of cases) and finished off with a visit to the butterfly collection. My partner, who is a real nature girl, was delighted to see so many species. If I could make one suggestion to the management - please do not let small children in to the building housing the butterflies. We had to follow one little brat around to stop him killing the butterflies (his parents seemed oblivious or uncaring about what their little monster was up to). Maybe an extra member of staff is needed in this building (they had someone there when I visited first time. Well worth a visit or a detour if you are in the area. They have a website so check the opening hours first ...

Visited Feb 9,2013. We are very big history buffs (spenting 3+hrs at the Chateau des Ducs de Bretagnet in Nantes), and still planning a 2nd visit. The Ch. de Goulaine is quite expensive at 9 Euro per adult, for the very limited, rather uninformative 1 hour tour of the 4 essentially empty rooms open to the public. (Wall hangings and portraits only.) The tour which is in French (there is an OK English language booklet provided), is more about the Goulaine family tree, than the actual history of the chateau architecture or it's significance in history. It's quite disappointing in truth-such a limited expenditure of effort for such a grand construction. With a hefty visitation fee,for value delivered.I actually came away with the disquieting feeling that the entire "tour" and it's obligatory gift shop was directed more to the discounted upkeep of the family estate, rather than any deep sense of "historical patrimony".On a more positive note, the LU biscuit (petite beurre) art exhibit (a poor expression for the wonderful works displayed) was fascinating and well done. The physical display/presentation was a masterpiece in design and planning! Definitely worth a visit! In many ways it trumps the presentation of the chateau itself.

Be it liking old castles, their history, heraldry, exhibitions, exotic butterflies, home-produced wines or just being served by the Marquise in their shop, then this is for you.It is situated E.S.E of Nantes down the A830, take the N149 turn and then the D74 through to the East of Haute-Goulaine. On the day we went they had a choir singing Medieval songs in the Hall. Splendid painted fireplaces and a wealth of heraldry including a large family tree with all of the coats of arms. There is a fascinating history here in that their Arms are, uniquely, half of England and half of France. It came about because Jean de Goulaine, Captain of Nantes, was sent by Geoffroy, Duke of Brittany to arrange peace in 1180 between King Henry II of England and Phiiip Augustus, King of France. He did so well that both kings agreed on these Arms and both Motto and Arms have been proudly borne by the Goulaine family ever since. The Motto, (“De cettuy-ci, de cettuy-là”) translates as, “Of this one here and that one there I award the crowns”.The exotic butterflies are literally housed in a “hot” house so if you don’t like heat than shed some clothes before going in. They are free-flying, amazingly bright and some are huge.Find it at 47°12’14.17N 1°24’12.16W
