This is an extraordinary house where the japanese artist Leonard Foujita lived and worked towards the end of his adventurous life. The guardians have tried to keep it exactly as it was, so it's far more than simply a museum or an art gallery. The free guided tour starts in the reception building with a short film of Foujita's life - useful, because I think he's not so well-known outside France - and then you walk through the garden to the house itself. Foujita was an eccentric personality (rather reminiscent of Andy Warhol) and he had many talents apart from his painting. For example, you have his clothes, and the very sewing machine on which he made them! Everything he collected, wooden shutters, old religious icons, gadgets, pots, all have been embellished with quirky little painted and stencilled figures. His studio is crammed with his working materials and models he made in wood and in metal, and on the walls are experimental frescoes. So much to see packed in a small area. The second time I visited, I took a friend who has visited dozens of art galleries in Europe: she was delighted to encounter something so out-of-the-ordinary, and of course completely unexpected in such a quiet village. Do check out Foujita's works on-line, and go and see it for yourself. Worth the effort and it's all free. Probably not so interesting for young kids, and please note, it's difficult to reach by public transport.
