We are very thankful for this wonderful place. The organizers have done a fabulous job of preserving the story of the faithful Huguenots. It is off the beaten path but well worth the visit. Our teenagers were powerfully impacted by the stories of courage, faith, and perseverance of their ancestors.

One of the finest museums that I have ever visited, rivalling the National Palace Museum in Taipei, which I regard as the finest I have ever seen. This is entirely different in character, being housed in the complex of stone buildings where Roland was born and containing his secret hiding place. Essentially you are visiting a beautiful, large stone home, including a bedroom of the period and a fully equipped kitchen. Opened in 1911, the museum is about 50 minutes drive from Nimes and well signposted. The visitor is led into a series of themed rooms where priceless artwork, porcelain, manuscripts, weapons and artefacts are displayed, detailing the history of the Camisard revolt. Following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes the Protestants were persecuted as an annoying state within a state. The revolt proper began in 1702 and really concluded with Roland's death in 1704, though remnants of it hung on for another decade. The concluding exhibits detail the imprisonment and diaspora of the Huguenots to other parts of Europe and overseas. Large portable pulpits made from wine barrels, and chalices which could be quickly assembled and dismantled in the countryside and hidden complete a comprehensive and stunning collection. Adults 5.5 Euros. Spend two hours hear. Photography is permitted.

We were very impressed with this museum which provides a real insight into the the history of the Cevennes and the Camisards. Very well organised, its excellent artefacts are displayed well, and it manages to both entertaining and informative. Quite a large display area, and it seems far larger than it appears from the outside. Helpful staff. Couple of good cafes beside it.We were unsure about whether or not to visit the Musee du Desert, but very glad that we did - highly recommended!

If you are interested in human rights, the Reformation, or persecution of minorities, visit this museum. Built from the farmhouse home of a Camisard leader, the museum traces the many decades of the Huguenot movement. interesting artifacts (tiny Bible a woman could hide in her wig, pulpits that can be disguised as barrels, and more) contrast with the tragic stories and brave resistance of many over many years. Worth a special trip.

We visited this museum during a trek to learn more about Protestant history in France. Its also not so far from Anduze so you can visit Anduze, go up to La Bambousserie and go to the museum on your way to Mialet and the Bridge. Nicely organized museum but the history of the Camisards during the 18th century (especially during 1702 to 1710) is heart-wrenching. Discriptions of the tortures suffered by the Camisard resisters is not for the faint of heart. Good collection of books on Protestants but surprisingly no books on the history of French Quakers.

A voir absolument...
