Wandering around in and outside of the rebuilt buildings and walls of the fort leads the visitor into the history of Marseille. The entry is for free and a short video installation provides sound background information about the history of Marseille and the purpose of the fort. We found this sight very interesting. On top, there is the great view on Marseille, the hill with Notre Dame de la Garde and the harbour and sea.

Unfortunately when we went most of the fort was closed. We went as part of the MSC Med Cruise. It sound good to go on a cruise but there is too little time to discover on your own. On Sundays everything opens late or is closed and they won't speak English even if they know it.

It's a lovely walk and the view that you get when you are on top of the fort is amazing! The guards are fairly nice and its located in a lovely area.

Not really just Fort Saint-Jean but now MuCEM, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations. Beautiful makeover, but full of 'space' rather than exhibitions. Just go and enjoy the stunning buildings and the views but don't expect a museum.

This beautifully restored and tastefully done. It is a wonderful adaptation of something old into a modern masterpiece. It is definitely worth the visit.
