Not much more to say except that it is definitely worth climbing all the stairs up to the Guérite du Diable!

France is, like so much of Europe, covered with castles and chateaus. Some are in good repair, others are in great need. Some you like to see just as is. This Citadelle is one of the gems. Handsomely built, revealing in its structure, Sisteron will capture the imagination. This is the sort of time you will want to be wearing good shoes and comfortable cloths. You will want to be unrushed.

We were told to not miss the Citadelle by our French friends, and we were not disappointed. We were using a lousy GPS that couldn't find the place (not the fault of the citadel, but it detracted from the day) and so we ended up parking a lot farther away and farther downhill than we needed to. The extra walk was not great with little kids, but once inside, the place was great. It's well organised with lots of info in both English and French (plus other languages). There are amazing views, and the kids got to explore some cool areas of the citadel, including the tower with its bell and the room where a Polish prince was locked up. We were there in the off season (November), but it was dead quiet and very pleasant to wander around. The chapel has been converted into a gift shop, which surprised me a bit, but it was tastefully done. The toilets there are the squat variety and are either hidden away inside the grounds, or just outside in the small parking lot. Neither toilets had any paper or soap, so bring your own (like normal in France - always travel with your own supply of both). The entry is typical of French attractions (pleasantly low compared to other countries) at just a hair over 6 euros for an adult with kids under 6 free. Bring your camera, and hope for a clear day. There are amazing views to be had in all directions. This place has zillions of stairs of varying surfaces. Not a place for wheels at all. Our three year old coped quite well, but needed to be carried toward the end of the visit as all the stairs were just too much, especially when she had to go to the toilet so we had to make the trek all the way down to the bottom and back up to the top again.Overall, worth a look, but go on a clear day to get the most out of it.

We loved this amazing citadel and it's amazing views over the ancient city. It's quite extensive, a lovely place to spend a couple of hours to explore with kids too. My son loved the big bell up the small winding tower, and seeing where a former prince of Poland was imprisoned. Many questions and imagining life was like many centuries ago. Always bring your own loo paper however, especially with little kids in tow!!

La Citadelle de Sisteron grounds are very well organized for the walking tour and worth the admission price. The citadelle is very impressive and the walk around at your leisure takes about two hours. Take your camera because the views are fantastic. There is English explanation of the citadelle history and also of the impressive, first of its kind open air theater that is still holding events today. You can buy beverages along the way. It is worth the extra time to walk through the old town too.
