The shops are great, the supermarket (Carrefour) great and the bistro we ate in opposite Carrefour was great value.

Had a great day trip here on 7 March. Lovely shops, great variety and brilliant food court. Have visited a few times and am never disappointed. Love Carrefour!! Highly recommended.

I visit Carrefour regularly: there are real bargains in wine to be had, plus coffee and pate are good value compared to here. The fish counter is a wonder to look at, and I've had some top quality Monkfish from there over the years. But I do miss the Tesco wine shop, as it was truly international, but it's a fact that the place (Cite Europe) is practically deserted these days. I'm sure it was designed to lure the Brits, and at FF10,00 = £1 it did, but when the rate dropped to 7, that all stopped, and even though the euro is now 73p, people are not coming back. Of course, that's good for me: no long queues at checkouts, but it must be boring for the staff working there.

Aside from the Hypermarket, the Cité Europe shopping mall in Calais show-cases mostly the same mix and offerings as you will find at home There is very ample free parking and it is a very short drive from the tunnel; a little longer from the ferry terminal. The mall is really driven by the Carrefour Hypermarket. This is very large and in addition to an exhaustive range of food and drink of every conceivable kind they sell just about anything one can need for home or leisure. Their seasonal promotions, particularly of Christmas fare are outstanding. For visitors from GB the bargains are in wines and beers (most other items costing similar to UK). Five and ten litre boxed wines can be particularly good value. Beers, including UK brands can be very reasonable. There is as one might expect, a very wide selection of wines of every type, quality and price – domestic and foreign. Be warned that the check-outs are not as efficient or as generously staffed as you may be used to and are apt to stall while the till jockey picks up a phone to debate in depth some lacking barcode or deals with some Brits with a prodigious drinks cart and a dodgy credit card. Also, remember to have fruit and veg weighed and priced in the department – they can’t do it at the till. Allow plenty of time for check-out if you have a ferry to catch! On the lower level, there is a food court. It is comprised of restaurants and cafes of varying degrees of pretention and price, mainly aimed at tourists. Avoid these and go upstairs to the Flunch restaurant. This is where the locals go to enjoy tasty and affordable lunches. The array of excellent starters, main courses and desserts leaves one spoilt for choice. Most dishes are prepared while you wait and the hot vegetable selection is unlimited self-service. These are presented in small volume and replenished every few minutes so they are always at their best. There is also a large ice-cream menu. It can be a very busy place at the lunch-time peak. It’s mass catering certainly, but of excellent quality and value: you can’t duff-up the French when it comes to food.

Having toured around france with no problems just before leaving to return to the UK we stopped in Calais for a couple of days, only to find we could not go in Citte Europe with our two yorkie dogs, for this reason they missed out on our buisness I would imagine they lose a lot of trade due to no dogs allowed.

This was great for us a pre-tunnel trip home. We had a very good breakfast and there are many shops. We were warned though, not to leave our dog in the car as it is not allowed-even under cover.
