Embarking on a mission to visit La Fabuloserie, we found it quietly tucked away on the outskirts of Paris in Dicy. It is not so much a museum, in the traditional sense as a cabinet of curiosities. If you are looking for good Outsider art collections this is the best I have visited so far, and I would venture to say far better than Jean Debuffet's one in Lausanne. The reason for this is the man who was also a friend of Debuffet. Alain Bourbonnais was an architect and this is his personal art collection. He converted a barn into the Fabuloserie as to highlight his collection. Rooms built for specific pieces, alcoves, a garden….the curation is above par in this respect and it makes a world of difference to the pieces. It is full of love for the artwork and it shows. There are no crowds so it feels like a very personal visit where you have the time and space to really appreciate and value the artwork on display. You are advised which rooms to visit on your walk around and there is a guide following you around so that if you have any questions they are more than happy to answer them for you, as there is no information text available. What you come to realise through speaking to the guides, who are fountains of knowledge and obviously very enthusiastic about the collection was that all these artists not having trained, had incredibly interesting back stories, so that the work they produced was more of a compulsion, produced with whatever materials they had to hand. I was particularly struck by the Frank Marshall room, which was extremely powerful. Figures eerily stuffed with hay, portraying the life of a little girl into adulthood rendered with brutal honesty. Towards the end, you are confronted with Alain Bourbonnais own sculptures, that are enormous and look like carnival float creatures. To go into the garden you need to have a guided tour, which is included in the price. This was conducted in French so it's good to have a translator with you. There are many, many artworks outside as well and the highlight being Petit Pierre's scrap metal fairground, which to my surprise, at a flick of a switch sprung to life and got all kinetic which was amazing. This is anything but a typical visit to a museum and so much the better for it. I was moved, surprised and enlightened. Highly recommended.
