The chateaux looks tired and could do with a cash injection to help with restoration. You are left to wander around though at your leisure (hand held guided tour recommended) There is plenty of family history alongside lovely tapestries. The whole place has a musky smell which is expected from such a historic place. It still has a family feel and you can imagine the place being full of laughter with children running around, definitely has an idyllic feel about the place. Take time to look around all of the rooms as there are hidden gems dotted around. A real insight into French history and privileged family life all in one place. There is a small shop at the end of the tour where you can purchase an ice cream or coffee without being commercialised. There is a lot that could be done to bring the place up to date but that in itself had its own charm. The place is totally un-commercialised which made a refreshing change.

Beautiful yet rustic, family lives there - someone was singing down the hall, lots of exciting history during the Revolution.

The chateau certainly has a real sense of history and I can honestly say it was an interesting place to stay. It's not the sort of place for those who are looking for a boutique hotel experience with all mod cons (such as a TV, room service, laundry), but it has character and you'll feel like you have truly got away from it all. We had a very pleasant dinner the first night we arrived, although don't expect to be able to choose any drinks other than the Gizeux red. We did have to laugh when we left the dining room to walk along the gallery to our rooms as there were two bats flying around inside, it did add to the slight sense of spookiness as the chateau is quite dark at night. It's also very quiet - I'd say this isn't really a place for young children or teenagers. We did the tour, and it was as others have described; all in French but you do get given a written English guide. Our friends' only complaint was that the toilet in their room was only sectioned off by a curtain - cue several jokes that I shan't repeat. All in all I would recommend this for one night; we stayed for three and it was relatively expensive. Top tip: they don't accept cards so make sure you have a wallet full of cash.

Once again, a chateau which its website doesn't do justice. The main word which springs to my mind when describing this castle is "authentic". From the wall paintings, some of which remained hidden behind a wall to protect them during the French revolution, to the secret 2 kilometer tunnel allowing French resistance fighters to hide and shelter in the basement during WW2 whilst Germans were stationed on the floor above... The chateau is large but has only a handful of rooms. Our room was gi-normous. We had a very pleasant dinner at the chateau, by candlelight. Reception by the owners is warm. Recommended stopover.

While parts of the Gizeux Castle date back to the Middle ages, the bulk of the visit takes place in Renaissance buildings.Set in a vast park, the Castle is very large and is a bit of a work in progress in terms of its restoration.Yet a very unusual treat awaits :There is a very long Gallery that was an Art School in the XVIIth century and the students decorated its walls with depictions of prominent Chateaux of the period including Versailles and Fontainebleau.The paintings are slowly being restored and are fascinating both as art works and historical documents.To make ends meet the owners operate a B&B operation in segment of the buildings which we did not visit.There is also a well appointed castle kitchenPhotos are allowed and our guide was well informed and pleasant.Altogether,while less polished than others, this Castle is full of charm.

La propriété des Lafont, ouverte aux visites (pour ma part ce fut une riche visite guidée) vaut largement le détourUne belle partie du château est à visiter, dont une superbe galerie peinte que les accueillants propriétaires commencent à rénover. On sent à travers la visite qu'ils ont envie de faire partager la beauté des lieuxPoint positif, la possibilité de prendre des photos (pas toujours le cas dans une demeure privée)Aussi pas mal d'animations pour les enfants

Une très belle galerie , des lieux habités par des châtelains accueillants , aimables et visiblement ravis de partager leur belle demeure. Une salle magnifique protégée des tourments de la révolution par un enduit protecteur et dont les trésors ont été retrouvés assez récemment...Des peintures murales superbes bien que ternies par les ans et l'humidité ...Visitez ces lieux et vous tomberez sous le charme tout en participant à sa conservation....

Kasteel wat niet van een koning is geweest maar in privé bezit en waar nog steeds de eigenaars wonen. Mooie muurschilderingen en door de audio tour duidelijke uitleg. Helaas wat uit de route van de andere kastelen maar zeker de moeite waard.

La famille Lafont qui habite le chateau a décidé de l'ouvrir à tous... c'est un chateau que je recommande car la visite peut se faire sous forme de visite libre (avec audio) ou avec un guide... On a accès à plusieurs pièces du chateau et on peut prendre des photos (!)... Une aile de ce chateau est réservé aux 5 chambres d'hote qui fonctionnent à l'année.... Plein de bonnes surprises dans la visite (la cuisine entre autre et le couloir des reproductions de chateaux). ... Je recommande vivement pour l'accueil hyper sympathique... de plus, un immense parking accueille les voitures, les vélos et les campings cars (qui ont un emplacement qui leur est dédié)....
