This museum which is next door to the St. Jean Bapistry has a large range of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artifacts from the area as well as a wide range of paintings and sculpture. Definitely worth a walk through.

I visited this museum specifically to see one painting in particular and ended up spending over three hours browsing the collections. The layout of the museum is confusing, and so I went backwards, chronologically, from modern to ancient. This actually worked for me, though. I was happy enough strolling through paintings and modern sculpture, but when I found the entrance to the medieval section (I'm a medievalist), my fun really began. The pre-modern collections are small and localized but excellent (it's Poitou-Charentes! Of course the collections are going to be fantastic), and the interpretation and presentation of artifacts is wonderful. The Roman archaeological site within the museum's basement was an unexpected surprise, as was the amazing display of paleolithic tools and pictographic stones in specially lit tables. This was my third trip to Poitiers and my first to the Musée St.-Croix. Had I known how wonderful their collections are, I would have visited every time I was in town. I look forward to visiting the next time I am in Poitiers. The admission price is low and worth every centime.

Very interesting museum on at least two basement floors (probably three), also large reception area and an upstairs too. Plenty to see so make sure you leave yourself enough time to visit the art galleries as well as all the artifacts hidden deep in the bowels of the museum!

This is a decent museum and has some excellent exhibits (although the Camille Claudel piece which i really wanted to see was on loan to Dresden!) - however the layout was a bit confusing and especially the paintings seemed to be grouped together in a rather muddled way. The cabinet of curiousities was interesting and would have been even more so if we had been able to make any sense whatsoever of the information which purportedly explained what everything was. The best organised parts were the Roman and mediaeval. Best time to go is Tuesday or the first Sunday of the month when it is free. I would have felt cheated if I had paid €4.

Extremely pleased with this museum. The archaelogy exhibit was fantastic and worth the visit. Enjoyed the Rodin and other sculptures and paintings throughout the museum. The cabinet of curiosities completed the tour in a fascinating way. Recommended as an end of the day, relaxing tour.

Didn't go in as they are in the middle of renovation and the areas I was interested in - ancient history and medieval are closed. Wish I had known before I did the walk there!
