We drove for over 30 miles from our place in France to visit the abbey. Beautiful medieval paintings/frescos - most impressive. The staff on reception were helpful and spoke good English. The shop was also well stocked with interesting items. But, when we climbed the stairs to the upper level to overlook the nave a very rude guide told us to go away as she was guiding a group of French visitors- we would have gladly joined them (just two of us), and I was happy to cope with the French, but the guide was not willing to have us there.Spolit the day - we had paid the same as the French group, but were restricted and not allowed to view the nave from there and spoken to rudely. As a (volunteer/unpaid) guide in a top English Cathedral I had to explain that UK guides (mostly unpaid) would never react in that rude and unwelcoming way. But, sadly that's the way some paid staff are in France.Sad in such a place...

The buildings of the Pyrenees reflect their environment - stony and spare, grand yet austere. But this church has a wonderful organ and great acoustics so hosts concerts throughout the year. There is a small museum that tells its sort and refers to the sad story of a race of slaves of small stare who lived in the area through into the 19th century. They had to have their own small door into the abbaye. Worth a visit.

I visited the Abbey a few years ago when the conservation work on the fresco's was being done, so they were covered in scaffolding. When I went back this year I was excited to see the fresco's and was not disappointed. These are very impressive and the scale of the Abbey is awe inspiring.
