I'm not sure which Citadelle other reviewers here have been to but I've just spent a lovely day with husband and two collies exploring Montmédy Citadelle. No, it's not tidy, no it's not "well kept" - but it doesn't need to be. If it was British, most of it would be roped off as unsafe - thank goodness it's not!We walked the dogs up from the lower town (a good hike uphill through woods) and spent the morning exploring the outer curtain walls. Amazing views, lots of little nooks and crannies to poke around in and totally FREE. I can imagine kids would love tearing around here, although some unfenced drops may give cautious parents pause. It's definitely not suffering from Health & Safety! We fancied doing the whole thing so having finished the outer wall circuit (just over an hour, nearly 2 hours all together walking up and back down to the town) we asked in the Tourist Info office if we could bring the dogs into the inner Ramparts, the bit you need to pay for. No problem, they said - so we drove back in the afternoon and spent another 1.5 hours at least exploring the inner ramparts, complete with underground passages, bats and again, amazing views. We also visited the Museum (without the dogs!) which was really interesting - history of fortifications in the area since Roman times - but you do need to understand at least some French to get the most from it, although the plans and models are good anyway. €5.40 to get into the inner walls and museum - we thought it was good value for money. If we'd read the other reviews on this page before heading up there, we wouldn't have bothered. I am SO glad we didn't get dissuaded - and hopeful that a more positive review will encourage other potential visitors.

As you approach Montmedy you see the Citadelle on the skyline and your expectation rises. As you enter via the two drawbridges and through the walls, the anticipation sinks. You can only walk the ramparts by paying a fee and this includes entry to the museum , which we didnt do. Rather scary and difficult circular iron staircase from the entrance up to the ramparts. Beautiful views from the ramparts but rather untidy in places. The whole place could be so much improved with a spot of tidying up and an injection of grants and imagination.

This is amazing place that could be awesome but is certainly not living up to its potential! If you are going to be one of the 80 people who inhabit this citadelle, don't you think you would at least be friendly?? You can only walk the ramparts if you pay the 5 or so euros to go to the museum, which isn't a lot, but we didn't want to see the museum just walk. We found it frustrating. Feels like a gem that France should take some time to polish.

We visited this place on a cold and wet November afternoon. I can imagine that it is a bit more lively and exciting in the summer, but it looked dreary and dilapidated under the grey sky, which was worsened by the ongoing renovation works and half-torn buildings. And still, with just a joint effort and some sponsoring, a citadelle this size could become a "Carcassonne of the north"... We did not visit the museum, but left soon after a small walking tour.

Vraiment regrettable
