You can still climb up to this view point, and its well worth it because Alesund is a beautiful town and the view from up there is stunning even in winter!Make your way to the end of the street called Vannspringdalen on the south side of the hill. There are brown signs pointing the way from the city centre, they say 'Fjellstua' (and there are ones pointing back into town saying 'Town centre').When you get to the top of Vannspringdalen there is an information sign with a photo and trails, its a simple 15min walk along well constructed gravel paths to the lookout.

With the stairs from the city park it is a short walk to the best view of Aalesund. With a small restaurant inside and a small café outside it spells a good trip for everyone in the family. You also get a good view of the surrounding Isles around Aalesund. It should be the first point of visit when arriving at Aalesund

Right now the 418 steps leading up to Fjellstua are closed for repairs. They will reopen in April/May 2015. There are, however, two alternatives: by car via Fjelltun or on foot up Vannspringdalen. Walking is a very nice alternative and the path is well signposted. Anyone can do that in 35 - 40 minutes and you will enjoy a nice view of the southern part of Aalesund and the Alps of Sunnmøre across the fjord as you ascend the mountain, which is only 140 meters high. The view from Fjellstua is awesome. Central Aalesund is right below you and you can enjoy the sights of the islands west of the town. They can, by the way, be reached in less than 20 minutes by subsea tunnels.

This Viewpoint provides a picturesque view of the charming Alesund and surrounding landscape, something which we,on our first day in the town, found invaluable to find our bearings. The walk up the steps can be rather strenuous at times although we did encounter several young children and elderly individuals walking up and the view at the top is of course well worth it! There is also a small café at the top, which is simple and like almost everything in Norway, quite expensive and the toilet facilities are only available to paying customers. Well worth the visit!

The 418-step trail was closed for reconstruction (should open sometime on spring'15 I think), so I drove to the top. One can stand on the roof of what looks to be a German WWII-period bunker to get an unobstructed view of the city of Alesund and the isles around it.

Norway's beauty is uncomparable. Small quant town, majestic view, modern engineering of the tunnels through the mountains, and convenient access to wireless internet. We definitely plan to return.

This really is one of the world's prettiest towns. I have visited Ålesund several times and it never disappoints. The view over the town from the Fjellstua Viewpoint is so very beautiful. Do not miss it If you are in Ålesund, even if time is short - it is well worth the trip up the hill.I promise you will get your best 'postcard' shot of your trip from here!

The view from Fjellstua is absolutey amazing! It isn't that high above Ålesund, but the view across the town and across the islands and the sea is really stunning. Highly recommended. We came just before sunset and the view towards the snow covered mountains was also something special. Very nice people working in the cafe, and the toast we had, was excellent.

As an Ålesund Authorized Guide I have visited Fjellstua over 40 times this year. At present the walk up to Fjellstua is under re-builing and has only access by road. This work is planned to be finished early 2015 ready for the New Cruise season. Enjoy.

We got up in the morning at 7 a.m..and around 7.40 we started a walk to the top. The stairs are being repaired so we took the road.. It is very well marked. It is quite steep walk but in some 20 min you get to the top (it is not hard walk so almost anyone can do it). and the view is magnificant. You have Alesund and surroundings at a glance.. and when the sun got up (around 8.20 a-m) it was really excellent. Definetly a must do in the early hours (we were the only ones there). The caffe bar at the top was closed, but it was not about a coffee anyway.
