The fortress is a large sprawling complex consisting of fortified walls, moats and draw bridges. There's been a huge amount of work gone into restoring lots of the historic sections. Weirdly there's a housing estate within the walls of the fort which has Soviet era housing blocks - typical of most Latvian towns. The housing area provides a strange mix buildings in ill-repair compared to the studiously renovated old parts. I actually found the contrast more interesting than the historic sections!

We ended up in Daugavpils by accident (car defect) and as we needed to kill some time there we decided to visit the fortress. It is the best preserved military fortress in Europe. It was built in the beginning of 19th century. Later it was used as a training base for military aircraft. There are buildings from early 19th century to new building. Some of them are inhabited, some of them are falling apart. The empty ones are in general freely accessible and you can, at your own danger, explore them as you like. I recommend to bring a light as some places are dark. Also be careful where to step etc. as there are no warning signs as we "spoiled tourists" are in general used to. Be sure to visit a church-like looking building (which in fact is a former water reservoir) next to one of the gates - it now serves as a tourist information center where you can find out about the fortress and its history.

I liked the fortress very much.. but it was strange to see modern houses near ancient buildings. There is no public transport to the most important monument of this town.Take a tram and then walk a few hundred metres.

After long years of neglect significant reparations done and continue in this significant 19th century monument. Mark Rothko Art Center located there as well.

This is one of the most outstanding tourism objects in Latvia and certainly must-see while visiting Latgale region. It is a great place to find out how looked 19th century military areas and learn more about Daugavpils history.The fortress isn't "castle" type but it consist of large building complex which basically is very similar to a normal area in city - there are streets, houses where live usual people and are placed different organizations - it is possible to visit it at any time of day without any entrance tickets.But I would advise to take a guide to visit it, because there is very, very less information around - actually there is only one information board about fortress history in general, but there isn't any signs to specific buildings - what function they had and so on. A good idea is to visit the fortress TIC where is a lot of information too, but you must check out the working time before.

Проездом из Европы посетили эту крепость. Ожидалось что-то грандиозное и монументальное. Оказалось весьма запущено и неухоженно. Очень надеемся, что когда-нибудь эта крепость приобретет достойный ей вид и займет достойное место среди достопримечательностей Прибалтики.

Отреставрировали... хорошо, скромно, но всё же. ресторанчик симпатичный. Память возвращает во времена, когда здесь было военное училище. Ещё представляешь гарнизон Русской армии (при царе). Ну как же нужно ненавидеть себя, чтобы разместить в русской крепости фото польских оккупантов? Противно. Но всё меняется и, если уже занялись ремонтом, то непременно займутся и реальной историей. Летом можно посидеть, попить пива, за валами крепости ветер с Двины не дует. Хорошо. Чем-то похоже на Конюшенную площадь СПб. Что-то Питерское. Ну это и понятно - строили одни и те же. Ну, надо очень любить этот странный, гордый и несчастный городок - Даугавпилс - Двинск - Борисоглебск.

В Даугавпилсе бываем часто и в этот раз решили посетить крепость. Место интересное, как для взрослых, так и для детей. Можно погулять и окунуться в историю города. Больше половины зданий не жилые, для любителей острых ощущений можно войти внутрь. Находится в 5 минутах езды на машине от железнодорожного вокзала.

Бываю в Даугавпилсе каждый год, в течении последних пяти лет. Заметно как администрация города вкладывает деньги и восстанавливает крепость. В этом году были в крепости впервые. Очень понравилось, хоть и погода была ветренная и даже дождливая. Очень интересно прикоснуться у истории города. Все ощущения словами не передать, нужно посетить и погулять по территории крепости. Единственное чего я не понял на этой территории - это жилые дома, где живут простые люди. И дома как-то не вписываются в общую архитектуру.

Передвигались вокруг и внутри на машине - огромная территория. Все сохранилось в первозданном виде,безумно интересно полазить по стенам крепости,предполагая где что находилось. А потом мы нашли парадный въезд,где часть крепости была восстановлена! Были проездом,потратили около 2 часов на осмотр и поехали дальше. Никаких сувенирных лавок,ларьков с пирожками. Только исторический объект и все.
