We were really looking forward to going to this place and drove for 3 hours to get there.... However when we got there in the afternoon on 26/10/14 we found it CLOSED down, by the Police by the look of the signs, (sorry I don't read Italian). There was red/white and black/white tape stretched out everywhere and signs with skull and crossbones around suggesting that you would be in mortal danger if you entered. We did think of trying but found that we were followed by a guy who didn't speak English but clearly said NO and PERICULOSO...... We have since learned that 2 small children (locals) who were visiting with their father were killed here in late September 2014, when the mud 'exploded'

L'area è una Riserva Naturale in cui si deveno conservare integralmente le carattestiche naturali senza apportare modifiche di tipo antropico, non è un giardino botanico nè un parco urbano, per questo motivo potrebbe apparire un paesaggio abbandonato. Stiamo provvedendo a sostituire le tabelle didascaliche che illustrano i fenomeno geologico e gli altri aspetti naturalistici della area. Per arrivare nel sito naturalistico consultare google maps, l'ingresso si trova al km 2.6 della Strda provinciale n. 8. Purtroppo, abbiamo riscontrato che la segnaletica stradale pur essendo presente lungo il tragitto non viene notata da molti visitatori, ci stiamo attivando per aumentarne la visisbilità e la quantità, ma questo non dipende solo dalla nostra struttura di gestione della Riserva. Ad oggi, l'accesso alla area naturale protetta è libero e gratuito. Le visite guidate gratuite sono garantite per gruppi superiori alle 10 unità e sono prenotabili per e-mail macalube@legambienteriserve.it e per telefono +39 0922 699210 o presso i nostri uffici che si trovano nel centro abitato di Aragona in via La Rosa, 53. Nel futuro contiamo di realizzare un centro visitatori e gli uffici di gestione nei pressi dell'area protetta. I go there often. This place is so different compared to the rest of the region. Really wild and suggestive, Populated by unusual vegetation being it in Sicily.

We were taken to the Maccalube by our friends who previously visited. Without them we probably would not have found it, as it is not well signposted. Very impressive seeing all the volcanic activity at close range. Definitely worth visiting if in the area.

This place is not in most guide books and we wouldn't have even known about it, if our host in Marsala didn't mention it, when we told her we were heading to Agrigento. "You must visit Maccalube then!" She told us what it was, and I wasn't too interested, but my boyfriend seemed excited to see it, so we went. Our GPS must have had out-of-date maps because it led us to a road that stopped being a road, so we ended up walking the last 700 m to the site. Then we saw that there is a new, paved road that leads straight to the entrance. This site was supposed to be a major tourist attraction a few years ago, but the plans fell through and now it's abandoned, unsupervised and free. Because of this, we were the only ones there until another Germany family showed up, so it was nice to have the place almost all to ourselves.When you come to the site - it seems almost lunar - a mud flat that is affected by volcanic activity that makes the water and clay bubble up to the surface. Because of the extreme heat, the erupted mud quickly turns dry and forms a myriad of tiny clay cones - the mixture of methane and brackish water is discharged and it gives the landscape this lunar appearance.The main part is a vast field of clay cones, and if you're quiet, you'll keep hearing bubbling sounds everywhere - the erupting mud - some tiny mud volcanoes, some bigger that form a trail of flowing mud down the clay cones. I've never seen anything like it.Behind the main site there are two small 'lakes' of erupting mud.I'm glad that we went, even though I was opposed to going at first. It wasn't like anything I've seen before, so if you're the adventurous type that likes discovering new things, I'd recommend Maccalube

il sagit d'une réserve naturelle protègé avec des micro volcan de boue et de gaz , j'y était avec mes enfant mais quand j'ai apris se qu'ils c'est passé cette été , je crois plus que je vais m'y approcher . deux enfants y on laisser la vie , englouti !

Ci sono già stato due volte e consiglio vivamente a tutti (soprattutto a chi si trova nella zona di Agrigento per visitare la magnifica area archeologica) di fare una visita in questo luogo straordinario e unico al mondo dove sembra di essere sulla luna!!! Davvero suggestivo.. Un contatto con la potenza della natura, dove l'essere si sente piccolo e sparuto. Un fenomeno strano e per certi versi inquietante. Un paesaggio che sa di altre dimensioni, quasi di un pianeta diverso. Da visitare.
