On the must list. Visit the Camera di Commercio di Reggio Emilia...the Consortium For The Protection of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar from Reggio Emilia http://www.acetobalsamicotradizionale.it/home_it.php . The tradition of Balsamic Vinegar production passionately presented with pride and a emotion. We took a tour of the facility and have a whole new view of the "Veritable Condiment". We found this jewel through a Parma region tour of Parmesan Cheese and Prosciutto. This is definitely a must see.

We ended up staying in Reggio Emilia quite by accident when visiting the area for a long weekend and so glad that we did.An absolutely beautiful place a little off the beaten track. If you are staying anywhere around Bologna area Reggio Emilia is definitely worth a visit if you want some peaceful down time away from the hustle and bustle.Decent shopping, lovely architecture and plenty of great street bar/cafes.I could live there quite happily! :)

Super charming town.Only negative is that it is hard to navigate in and out of town with GPSMarket on Saturday morning an extraordinary treat (parade a plus)Beautiful churches & piazzasEveryone on bicycles all over the streets...bikes and dogs everywhere.Home of cheese and balsamic (not as well known as Modena) but just as good, a little sweeter actually as it is aged in cherry wood.Great bargain to get the condiment which is only aged less than 12 years (to be DOCG balsamic it has to be aged more than that)Great stop if you fly into Milan enroute south to Tuscany or Umbria. Not a lot of Americans seen here and not so crowded.

An excellent medium town. The city center has an hexagonal shape with a system of small square linked each other. You can just walk to see all the center; good museum and markets. Remarkable the "fotografia europea" festival in may. Reggio is very close to the hills and a beautiful "appennino" mountains and also to the all little town near the Po river (Guastalla, Novellara, Brescello with Peppone and Don Camillo....)

Reggio is a small town and the best place to see is the city centre which has couple of churches, One of which is very very old. The market centre is full of small shops where you can buy designer clothing. There are lot of restaurants and coffee shops to spend time and a huge square where you can enjoy the quiet garden breeze in summer. An excellent place to spend time on weekends.

Through the Parmeggiano Reggiano consortium -section of Reggio Emilia (sezionere@parmigianoreggiano.it) - we managed to schedule a visit to the Lateria Centro Sesso to learn about this delicious cheese production. At our arrival at 8:00 am Ann ( our guide for the visit) was already waiting for us and conducted the most interesting and informative visit to the producer. We managed to see the whole process, from the milk truck arriving to deliver the milk just taken from the cows, to the cooking, marking, storage, etc. The visit lasted more than 2 hours. Ann was wonderful, super courteous and deeply knowledgeable. And the whole visit was free of charge, courtesy of the cheese maker and the consortium. I recommend this visit to anyone that comes to the region.

we used this town as an overnight stop between Venice and Florence by car. The "town" was larger than I imagined and without a GPS we probably would still be looking for our hotel, the Hotel Posta. Since we arrived late in the day we did not see much of the town but we did walk the old section to and from dinner and it looked charming. we will plan to return if our next Italian trip brings us close by.

I wanted to take us for a food experience and looked into the "food tours" , but the cost seemed silly since we had a van to get around. I looked into possible tours of parmigiano dairies and balsamic vinegar makers while at home, and quickly found there are plenty of free tours to be had as the producers of the region want to educate on their crafts. Through the internet we settled on the Cavalli balsamic facility and through the regional dairy association arranged for one of their staff to meet us at a dairy and give us a tour. Both were AMAZING experiences and we learned a ton. The tastings were great and we made purchases, too. We would have done a ham tour as well but one of us is vegetarian so we skipped it. Enjoy!

Great town to explore, lots of history here, lovely piazzas, fantastic food, good shopping too. Easy to reach off the A1 Milano-Bologna autostrada or by rail on the Milano-Bologna line. Easy parking just outside the city centre.
