We had to make a detour to visit this castle in the centre of Fontanellato, but we are certainly glad we did. It's got a lot of character for a small castle, my daughter loved exploring and throwing snow balls into the castle moat! There is a guided tour at 11:00am Tuesday to Friday.The surrounding town is very quaint and worth a quick look round; it was very snowy at the time of our visit and everything looked beautiful.

We visited with our Italian friends who took us for a meal in the town.We saw the Costello and decided to do the tour which was 7euro each.You get to see some fantastic art and furniture including a very unusual snooker table which looked like a homemade conversion from a pocketless billiard table.You should try to visit as you will enjoy its rooms and its observatory.

Rocca Sanvitale looks interesting from the very first encounter. It's located in the middle of the city and surrounded by a moat, and the mix of the two is not something I've encountered many times. On the inside, there is one room that I haven't seen in any castle before. Its called the optic room and it holds a set of ancient lenses that transfer the picture from the outside to the room, like an ancient movie camera, which is very interesting! Apart from this, the interiors are rather poorly furnished and decorated, so there's not so much to see. One interesting artifact was a 17th century chest with a system of perfectly working locks. The tours are only in Italian, but there's a good description of the rooms in English. Check before visiting, what time the tours start.

If you fancy a break from shopping at Fidenza Village, why not take the short drive to this beautiful walled town. Fontanellato is small but prosperous. It is well known for the Santuario and among the British as WWII prisoner of war camp (Eric Newby was imprisoned there). The main sight is the Rocca (fortress), which is surrounded by a pretty moat filled with lively carp. I would recommend taking the guided tour. It takes 50 minutes for the full tour or 30 for the short tour). The tour guides are well informed and there is much to see. Although this is a fortress, in reality it is the stately home of the important Sanvitale family. The castle is rich in history and contains some amazing frescos. The sala ottica is fun too. Immediately outside the castle is a very small and very old church containing the Madonna Nera (same side as the horsemeat butcher). The church is occasionally open, so you may be lucky. Sunday is market day.

Castle itself is nice and very interesting to see, but the main reason to go there is Parmigianino frescos: simply a masterpiece! We decided to have all castle guided tour, but if you don't have enough time it's possible also to have short tour with Parmigianino frescos and optical room in the tower. Fontanellato is also a nice village and a walk through its streets to Santuario della Madonna has beeen very pleasant

Grandiosa costruzione che rappresenta il centro città con le sue mura poderose ancora cinte da fossato colmo d'acqua ; entriamo nell'articolata struttura e partecipiamo alla visita guidata che ci consente di apprezzare diversi ambienti e scoprire un pò di storia ; arrivano poi le due chicche e cioè la stupenda "sala del Parmigianino" che viene raccontata nei minimi particolari e fatta rivivere anche con giochi di luci, e quindi la "sala magica" che ci fà vivere un interessante esperimento, nato da una mente geniale.

ho visitato la rocca di recente. si può visitare solo con la guida e devo dire che è la scelta giusta. si può optare per una visita breve 20 minuti (costo 4 euro) oppure visita normale di 1 ora (costo 7 euro salvo riduzioni). Io consiglio quella di un oretta! vedrete dei bei quadri e le sale della rocca, più una parte esterna con la prima "camera oscura" il tutto spiegato superbamente dalla guida! da andarci...informatevi prima sugli orari per non aspettare.

In una domenica piuttosto fredda abbiamo deciso di visitare la Rocca. Abbiamo scelto il percorso breve (20 minuti) che ci ha permesso di vedere la stanza del Parmigianino e la camera ottica.Ottima la guida simpatica e competente e molto disponibile la signora all'entrata che ci ha permesso di portare il nostro cagnolino con noi (visto il gran freddo avremmo dovuto andare a turno io e mia moglie).Ecco un ottimo esempio di valorizzazione di un monumento magari poco conosciuto ma molto bello.....Complimenti davvero!!!!

Rocca molto ben tenuta sia all'interno che all'esterno...magnifiche soprattutto la camera del Parmigianino e la camera ottica...ma anche le altre meritano.Possibilità di fare due percorsi di visita entrambi con una guida che accompagna,noi abbiamo scelto quello completo che costa 7€ e ne siamo soddisfatti... Consigliato!!!

Castello veramente tunuto molto bene(se consideriamo anche che è di proprietà del comune) affresci privi di muffa e veramente ben tenuti e restaurati.Spettacolare la camera ottica da dove si vede la piazza...consiglio vivamente di spendere i 7 euro e di fare il giro completo...ne vale la pena...
