We stayed at the nearby Hotel Panoramic which was excellent and has a similar view. The road up is not for the faint hearted. You might prefer to cable car up and walk down.

you can go up by car, by cable car or on foot. Cable car one way EUR 4,70 and return EUR 7,20. You can go up by cable car and return on foot, which is a nice walk among trees with views of Lake Maggiore.The church is easily accessible from the cable car, but there are many steps. The church outside doesn't show all the beauty it is inside. On the way, you'll see beautiful sculptures of the Last Supper in real size.Definitely worth the climb, even if it's a cloudy day.

Set high above Lake Orta on a granite outcropping, this is an absolute must to get the whole view of the lake and Isola di San Giulio in the middle. Previous reviewers are not kidding about the winding drive (on narrow roads) to get here, so hold on to your seats!

This is a lovely place on the west side of Lago d'Orta. The church is high up on the mountain side. Plenty of parking and an ice cream van and large picnic area. Check opening hours, it was closed when we were there. There are some walking trails ending up here. But we parked the car in a village a bit lower and walked up.

I think you need a car if you want to visit this site, as I didn't see any public transportation there. No problem for me as we were doing our tour by car. It's a 5 minutes drive from the lake shore by a narrow road (10 minutes if you follow the signs for the coaches), but you are rewarded with beautiful views of the island of San Giulio down in the lake, and the Alps far away. The church is from the 18th century, nothing special about it but the white goats by the place.

We visited the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso as part of an excellent tour with Maggiore Discovery (we went on to the village of Orta, the Sacro Monte and the island of St Giulio afterwards), and this was one of the highlights! It is difficult to get to unless you have your own transport and a head for heights - we had neither, so Fabri took us up to look at the historic art work of the sanctuary and stunning panoramic view over beautiful Lake Orta.The church contains frescoes by Lorenzo Valsesian Peracino, an altarpiece by Caravaggio and a 16th century organ. We were there on a Saturday when the church was prepared for a wedding - it looked beautiful, although we didn't stop to wait for the bride!The view speaks for itself!NB there is parking, toilets and a small refreshment kiosk at the church.

Questo piccolo santuario sulla cima dei monti, gode di una vista bellissima sul lago d'Orta e l'isola di San Giulio. La serenità che vi regna è sovrana e quasi spiace sentire il rumore del flash della macchina fotografica che immortala i bei panorami che si godono da qui su quasi tutto il lago, il Mottarone, le Alpi e la pianura verso Novara.Un passante mi ha raccontato che è chiamato anche il santuario dei suicidi, perché da qui ahimè, chi si buttava o cadeva, non aveva speranza di vivere (è situato proprio sullo sperone della montagna). Nonostante sia marzo, c'è ancora neve e fa abbastanza freddo.La costruzione si compone della chiesa, della torre e della casa parrocchiale.L'interno è dipinto e decorato e la cosa che impressiona di più sono le quattro colonne che il Peracino ha dipinto sopra all'altare. Infatti, se camminate dritto dall'ingresso vedrete le colonne nella volta (non nella cupola) tutte diritte e uguali, ma avvicinandosi vi sembreranno sempre più grandi! Se poi le osservate ai due lati opposti dell'altare, vi accorgerete della magia: appaiono curve e pendenti verso l'interno.... Un segreto che il custode ha voluto svelarci. Grazie!

Da questo santuario è possibile vedere uno dei panorami più belli del mondo sul Lago d'Orta! Vedendolo sullo sperone a valle non si direbbe che la strada per raggiungerlo possa essere così larga e ben tenuta, non mi ha dato problemi di mal d'auto. Peccato che la chiesa in inverno sia aperta solo al pomeriggio, ma così abbiamo un motivo in più per tornare! Ampio parcheggio e area per picnic. Luogo paradisiaco!

La vista che si gode da questo santuario è una cosa meravigliosa..si vedono il lago d'orta e quello maggiore e nelle giornate piu limpide anche tutta la bassa novarese...MERAVIGLIOSO!!!
