Not really much to see but interesting to stand in the piazza in front and think about what it was probably like when it was built. The entry doors are alarmed and say that you cannot enter unless during the hours listed as the alarm will sound.

San Cataldo is not just a church. Is the symbol of Tarantinian identity (OK, it shares this place with mussels of course). I invite you all to have a look at the perfect marbles of the "treasure".

Unfortunately we chose a time when the cathedral was closed. our own fault. So we walked through the old town - that was a mistake. Dirty, uncared for, we were glad to get out having walked the length of the promontory that forms the old town. A place best avoided !!

I would like to respond to tourists who have found closed the cathedral. Not your fault, but you have lost the chance to visit a jewel of Byzantine architecture. It is not correct to judge a monument without seeing it first.

Although when compared with other Apulian Cathedrals and churces, San Cataldo does not look like to be as pretty as the one in Trani, Lecce, Martina Franca, etc, this church as thousands years of history which are completely revelaled only when you get into it.Mosaics on the floor, a paleo-christian crypt in the basement and, what fasinates me most, is that each capital and column of the cathedral came from a different Greek temple of the ancient Magnagrecia period. You should look details which tell you the long story of this piece of history.You should not miss also one of the best and best kept exhamples of Baroque architecture in Italy, Saint Cataldo Cappellone (big chapel), just at the left of the altar: it is a triumph of marble and frescos.Very important under an historical point of view is the combination of a paleochristian church, a romanico style of the building with a Norman bell tower and a Rococò style of the Facade.

The duomo was closed but I write this review so others planning a tour of the heel of Italy give Taranto a miss. I don't know now why I booked it. Perhaps it was a romantic notion of its famous dance being practised on every street corner. I'm not sure. The old town is GRIM. All of it. There is no pretty harbourside. The ' beach' is tiny and GRIM. The new town shops are plentiful and its quite a pleasant area but we don't come on holiday to shop. So visit Matera- fabulous - and just cross your fingers that this is the only mistake I make on our two week holiday!

Come Cenerentola che nasconde un cuore d'oro sotto panni dimessi, così Taranto vecchia, posta sull'isola collegata alla città nuova dal ponte girevole, all'apparenza in totale degrado, nasconde veri e propri gioielli non pubblicizzati e, quindi, da scoprire da parte del turista attento anche ai risvolti culturali di una città. Attraversando, dunque, gli stretti vicoli dell'isola che trasudano storia ma anche vita quotidiana per la presenza dei pochi abitanti che ancora restano ancorati alle proprie radici, si passa tra palazzi e conventi ristrutturati e sedi di università ed uffici, accanto ad edifici diroccati od abbandonati in attesa di restauro, il tutto in una atmosfera che, specie di sera, alla luce dei lampioni, sembra surreale! Ed è quì che improvvisamente appaiono degli slarghi con il magnifico Duomo che soprattutto internamente offre delle meraviglie: l'ampia struttura interna a croce con le navate ed il soffitto ligneo, il baldacchino con l'altare e lo stupendo abside, la cripta ed, infine, ad abundantiam, la piccola cappella laterale che "abbaglierà" il visitatore per le statue marmoree e la ricchezza degli arredi, dipinti ed i rivestimenti in marmo pregiato. Ma a questo gioiello si aggiungono la stupenda chiesa di San Domenico o il porto peschereccio, ecc. Un consiglio: se potete visitatela durante i riti della settimana santa ed approfittate dei ristorantini tipici della stessa zona!

Si trova nel centro storico, nell'isolotto che divide il Mar Piccolo dal Mar Grande. E' del X secolo, ma è stata più volte rimaneggiata perciò ha una facciata barocca. Vale, comunque, la pena di visitarla....

Questo Duomo con oltre 1000 anni di storia sorge nel cuore della città vecchia e si raggiunge facilmente percorrendo per intero la centrale via duomo per l'appunto.All'interno un trionfo di capolavori, dalla navata centrale all'altare dove sono conservate le spoglie del Santo, dalla statua d'argento del Santo stesso alla cripta sotterranea fino ai dipinti in cornici di marmo di pregiata fattura.Non manca davvero nulla.Assolutamente da visitare!!!

Passeggiando per la città vecchia che purtroppo è lasciata a se stessa se non per la pulizia che per fortuna non manca, ci si imbatte in questi capolavori che una volta chiusa la porta alle spalle ci avvolgono in atmosfere che ammaliano i pensieri e fanno valorizzare il lavoro dell'uomo nel corso dei secoli.Da non mancare, il resto lo dicono le guide.
