The Bitonto Cathedral must be one of the finest examples of an early Christian cathedral in Italy. This beautiful Romanesque cathedral dates from the 12 century and is a refreshing change from the 'over the top' Baroque churches which can be found in great numbers throughout Italy. The simple lines result in uncluttered space which is quite overwhelming. When we arrived at the cathedral the crypt was closed but as we were leaving we met the gentleman who administers it and he opened it up for us. This is not to be missed! An extensive architectural project has uncovered previous building which reveals the development of Christianity during the different eras since it's establishment in the 12 century. This cathedral is certainly worth going to see.

This stunning Romanesque Church predates all the Baroque ones in places like Lecce by hundreds of years! Bitonto was the place where Christianity arrived in Southern Italy, and when it did it built in top of Roman buildings. This Cathedral has restored these layers of history in an amazing underground crypt .. It is so well done, the descriptions are in English and. German as well as Italian. The church above the crypt is stunning in its simplicity .. With very unusual painted roof rafters. Really it is worth the trip to Bitonto just to see this magical place. The locals are very proud it it, but it isn't geared up for major tourism so if you want to look around ... Just ask a local and they would be happy to help. We will come back ...

The Church is old so it it cool, but it really isn't all that spectacular considering all the other churches in Italy. The archeological site underneath is very comprehensive and many people don't know it is there. If you like that sort of thing go check it out, otherwise the church is forgettable.

This Romanesque building from the late 11th century has early Christian church ruins in the lower level. There is a tile figure of a Gryphon (Griffin) dating back a couple thousand years. It was found while repairing a church floor. A gryphon is described as a mythical monster with head and wings of a bird and body of a feline and a symbol in Christian art of the double nature of Jesus Christ -- divine and human. There is a viewing area on the main floor level to look down on the Gryphon. But going down to the lower level allows a better view and prespective. The Ambo (pulpit) is of marble carved by Apulian stonecarvers.

Cattedrale dedicata a S.Valentino, viene considerata la più completa ed evoluta espressione del romanico Pugliese. Facciata tripartita con splendido rosone centrale. Sono simboleggiate le tre grandi religioni monoteistiche. Nel lato sud caratteristici sono i capitelli a stampella e porta della scomunica. All'interno rilevante è l'ambone di Nicolaus e il pulpito di Gualtierus. Da visitare sono gli scavi che hanno riportato alla luce in più fasi storiche una splendida chiesa paleocrisitana...ma se dico tutto qua, poi che gusto c'è a scoprire quando di bello c'è in questa cattedrale e a Bitonto?

nessuna esperienza negativa, tutto e' filato liscio, mi e' piaciuta molto la cattedrale del 1300 in stile romanico, e le guide che ce l'hanno fatta visitare molto gentili e disponibili, poi un museo che nn ricordo il nome bello da vedere , la porta baresana affascinante di sera e con bei locali ristoranti e pizzerie,una villa comunale tenuta benino si poteva tenerla meglio comunque una vacanza positiva

Inserita nel centro storico di Bitonto, la cattedrale spicca nella piazza centrale. Edificata in stile romaico, affascina per gli esterni, sicuramente degni di nota e molto ben curati. L'interno è invece ben diverso: poco decorata ed abbastanza spoglia, la chiesa non colpisce come per la volta molto particolare a capriate o come per la bella facciata. La mancanza di dipinti o arazzi sulle pareti la ridimensiona un po'!

Una bellissima opera in un centro storico molto bello e suggestivo che consiglio di percorrere lentamente.
