For once, this Italian museum has really helpful explanations of what you're seeing, and high quality exhibits that haven't been spirited away from the area where they belong to some apparently more important museum. The Palestrina museum is housed inside the Colonna Barberini Palace, which was built on the site of a sanctuary to the Roma goddess Fortuna at the apex of the town. Just keep going uphill to find it. You can see why this site was chosen as the views across Lazio and down to the sea are just glorious. Inside are busts, tombmarkers and other artefacts, all of outstandingly high quality. Look for the moving portrait heads of three children. The museum's outstanding exhibit, however, is the famous Nile mosaic, which intricately depicts the Nile from Ethiopia to Alexandria, complete with exotic flora and fauna and inhabitants. The ticket includes entry to the archeological site over the road, but really, there's not much to enjoy here except the view.

The other reviews tell you what to expect - I only want to say - GO!. The Nile mosaic is worth the entrance fee alone but the rest of the museum will reward an hour or so of your time. Palestrina itself is a delight. Quiet and attractive with several pleasant cafes and a good cheese and salami shop in the main street which will make up great panini for a picnic lunch in one of the public gardens. The main visitors carpark is free but at the bottom of the town which means a longish climb up to the museum. There are only a few parking spaces outside the museum but sometimes a tourist bus runs from the lower town up to the top. A helpful (english spoken) tourist office is situated at the top of the escalator from the carpark and they are very keen to promote the town.

My Italian friends insisted that I visit Palestrina with them and I'm glad they did. Even though I live in Rome, I knew nothing about it--and from the lack of crowds, I'm not the only one. (I saw only one non-Italian family at the museum.) The temple complex is massive and offers stunning panoramic views from the top. The well-planned museum sits atop the structure and displays statuary, votives, and a wonderful mosaic. Be sure to bring a good guidebook because an interpretation adds to the enjoyment of the sight.

Palestrina's interesting archeological museum is located in the historic Barberini building (at the top of the largest pagan temple in Europe) and houses a collection of mosaics, statues and sculptures. The most famous piece is an enormous and exquisite mosaic of the Nile. Other works of interest include burial markers, mirrors, ciste (ancient beauty cases), and ex-votos depicting the body parts that ancient pilgrims to the temple prayed to have healed. Below the museum there is an open-air archeological area where the ancient pagan temple dedicated to the goddess of fortune can be explored and photographed. 60-90 minutes needed for a full visit, guaranteed for excellent panoramic photographs. Open everyday.

For 5 Euros, this museum offers a stunning experience, far beyond what is normally encountered in a usual museum trip. At first, it doesn't look like much when you step into the first room, but we discovered the museum itself is housed in the Palazzo Colonna Barberini, which is built above an ancient temple complex dating back to the Second century, the "Santuario della Fortuna Primigenia," or the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia. As you move through the museum, it gets more interesting.Since we didn't know what to expect, it was so amazing to stumble upon this spectacular complex, and to see its original parts from various angles in the building. I cannot believe it was only 5 Euros, because it certainly would be more if it were placed somewhere like Rome. But, the fact it is not is wonderful, and it adds much to its charm and unspoiled character. It appears this archaeological site and town is not well known among tourists, and it is certainly off the beaten track. We would not have gone to the town if we didn't have a car. We parked at the bottom of the hill and walked all the way up to the top, which was a little workout, but it was fascinating seeing this interesting little town! The views are beautiful, and the drive to and from the town was also a treat. If you can make it, go there for the gift of the experience and to support this town's treasure.

This jewel of a museum is set high above the medieval town of Palestrina, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Palestrina contains a smallish collection of artifacts found in the area. The most famous is the 1st Century B,C. floor mosaic depicting the flooding of the Nile, in and of itself well worth a visit to this sadly unappreciated museum. We were wowed! After visiting the museum, we also enjoyed about the town and took in the views of the Alban Hills. Makes for a most wonderful day trip.

The museum is not that big. It presents a good sample of historic objects which go several centuries B.C. It was great to see figures from Fortuna and the matronas, sculptures of important Romans and religious art. The most impressive was the set of mosaics, and particularly the one describing the Nile.
