We ended up visiting on Sunday, so many thngs were closed, but we were able to go into the church. Amazing!

The Cathedral is worth a visit. Rieti is a city surrounded by ancient walls. Some work going on in the centre but still lots to see. Unfortunately the underground doesn't open for visits very often so best to check beforehand. Take a look at the shops in Via Roma, stop off at one of many bars or restaurants. Piazza S.Rufo is said to be the centre of Italy.

I have travelled to Rieti a number of times as is one of the larger towns close to the Sabine Hills, where I live. I have always appreciated the beauty of the historic centre and how alive it feels. It has an amazing 16 km bike/walking trek that takes you near the river and within the historic centre of Rieti and its surrounding historic walls. The central piazza is large and has many beautiful historic buildings within the nearby streets. The real hidden gem within the historic centre that my husband and I discovered the other day, is under the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The church itself has been redecorated but has some original frescos on the walls. The real treasure, however is found in the crypt, under the altar and below ground level. It dates back to 1100's and has beautiful frescos on the walls, plus amazing and intact archways plus a decorated central ceiling. It is like walking back in time and completely peaceful. If you go to the historic centre of Rieti, don't miss this hidden medieval crypt.

Rieti is a hidden gem. The competition with Rome and its position in the sabine mountains result in few tourists vistiting the place. It is surely off the beaten track for international visitors, which makes it all the more interesting and authentic.

Beware the midday closing - everything (including the churches) is shut between about 1 and 4.But good selection of churches and shopping around via Roma, and attractive river running through, make Rieti good for a day trip

Not certain if Rieti is classified as a small city or a large town but mostly squeezes itself within its medieval walls. The old and modern blend comfortably with each other and wandering around the clean streets or along the river is a pleasurable experience. Parking is easy and there is much to do with churches, theatre, Roman remains, eateries, and modern shopping area to name but a few.

Domenica 8 marzo abbiamo vistato Rieti. Il fiume che attraversa la città con le montagne innevate del Terminillo alle spalle danno una bella fotografia di questo tranquillo paesino. Il fiume si presta ad ottime passeggiate lungo le sue sponde. Un ponte costruito su un antico ponte romano segnala l'accesso alla via principale e quindi al suo centro storico. La cittadina è molto piccola in un paio di ore la si gira in lungo e in largo, i palazzi non sono tutti ristrutturati, rendono il centro un po' disabitato. Ogni tanto percorrendo alcune stradine si sbuca in qualche piazza molto caratteristica e bella. Degno di nota sicuramente il duomo, costruito su una chiesa del 500, e le scuderie del palazzo vescovile. Carino anche lo storico bar del centro, peccato che volevamo vedere Rieti sotterranea, ma domenica pomeriggio era chiusa.....In ogni caso suggerisco la visita di questa cittadina.

Rieti è un bel paesone con un ricco centro storico ben tenuto e curato.....sicuramente da vedere....

Non sempre inserita nei circuiti turistici più gettonati, ma degna di attenzione e di una visita turistica. Situata proprio nel centro geografico italiano in una conca valliva., solcata del fiume Velino intorno ai 400 mt e a pochissima distanza dal Terminillo. Il centro storico si visita benissimo a piedi ed è raccolto intorno ai monumenti degni di nota quali il Duomo, il Palazzo vescovile, quello comunale, S. Agostino e S. Francesco. Non mancare il giro dei conventi francescani vicini, ben accessibili e molto suggestivi.

Il centro storico di Rieti ti prende l'anima e ti impregna di un'atmosfera sognante di cui è difficile fare a meno tanto da riuscire a convincerti di ritornarci spesso. L'alveo del Velino e le mura medievali circondano,a mò di scrigno,un tessuto urbano che sembra fatto apposta per esaltare bellezze architettoniche sulla cui immagine rischiano l'incanto tutti coloro che ne sanno percepire le peculiarità estetiche.Chiese e fontane decorano piazze e quartieri dove ancora si esalta il buon gusto di una popolazione orgogliosa delle proprie origini che non si adagia però sui fasti del passato.Ed è bello notare una conservazione consapevole dei "tesori" di cui la città è ricca nonostante le esuberanze interventistiche di cui,come in altre città italiane,in epoche non lontane,anche questa zone ha rischiato di essere vittima.E' andata quasi bene e quindi godiamoci ,per quanto possibile,questo patrimonio inestimabile di cui tutti dobbiamo essere fieri.
