What a unique garden! Ninfa evidently existed in Roman times, was abandoned then reclaimed, then abandoned again stricken by marshes and malaria. It was restored in the 20th century with beautiful gardens, trees and other landscaping built around the ruins of the old buildings. We visited in October ... happened to be in the area the two days it was open that month, and managed to get there for the morning bilingual tour (Italian/English) - which was conducted in English that morning since all of us were English-speaking. Take the train to Cisterna, then the shuttle (2.50 euros) to the site. Take the shuttle back to the train when you're finished. They say you can't wander around on your own, though we found we could stray a bit after our tour was done. The main part is more-or-less an English design, but there is also a smaller Italian garden you can visit for a small, additional fee.Get there early like we did. around 9.30. Very short lineup. By the time we left around noon there were hundreds and hundreds lined up ... and the parking lot was packed full of cars, minivans, buses and RVs.Make sure your camera is in good working order, we got some amazing images even in early October... can only imagine how fabulous it must look in Spring/early Summer with more of the flowers in bloom.Put it on your list if you happen to be in the general area on a day it's open!

The problem with the Giardini is that it's opend only one day per month! Check before going there, and enjoy the peacefull place that inspired Liszt

We visited in mid may when the numerous roses that clothe the old ruined village were coming to their peak. It was a wonderful experience made all the better by a very well informed guide who seemed to know most of the plants personally. If you don't speak Italian then please try to join one of the 2 tours each open day which are in English. The other huge advantage is that you can bypass the enormous queues for the standard Italian tour. If you are driving yourself there allow plenty of time as there was a 2-3km tailback to get into the carpark at 10am (the only English tour in the morning goes at 10.30am). We made it - just! Its a pity the garden is not open more often as then the crowds might be spread out a little. Another big queue for the toilets. But a pleasant little cafe next to the carpark which does panini, ices, drinks etc.

We saw a TV show about this garden and since we were already planning to go to Italy and be in the area, we added it to our list. My wife is an avid gardener and I love old ruined buildings. It was a perfect match for both of us. I was enthralled by the history of the medieval town and how the ruined town had been transformed into its current state. My wife was amazed at the beauty of the gardens and the diversity of plants that have been placed there. Due to its location and unique micro-climate almost any plant will grow and thrive there. We lucked into an escorted tour but sadly due to our restricted itinerary, (had to dash off to catch a cruise ship) we were unable to stay as long as we both would have enjoyed. It was a perfect day. If you plan to go, make it a full day stop.

Its a real effort to turn a ghost town into a beautiful garden such as this. Too bad the tour was mostly in Italian, fortunately there's a nice lady who translated some of the words to us. Even to the Italian the place is still unfamiliar. I remember mentioned it to a local at the news stand and even policemen in Rome, they just gave me confused face. We went there by regional train from Rome to Latina station, and continued by taxi. The taxi cost about 17 euro. From Ninfa, we went back with the shuttle bus to Cisterna di Latina.

A visiter absolument.

Andate a sognare
