I've kept quiet so far ....not wanting to ruin things. You're at Civitavecchia wondering where to go locally and explore the town and markets. But, about 20 mins away by bus there is the hilltop Medievial walled town of Tarquinia. Here is cobbled streets, the Palace that is now a museum, shops and Markets at least on Wed mornings. There are Etrusian tombs here and in the museum 500bc vases etc. You can take the bus maybe hourly from the wharf area and return or rent a car from Hertz. Be caresful; as there is lunch close of petrol around 1-3pm with limited and difficult self service. And by the way, the town of Brassiano is unspoilt and I felt like I was the first tourist there. In the opposite direction, I'd take the normal road rather than the Autostrada that might be too challenging with cost and turn offs. This town with Fort if about 40 mins. An iPhone with maps is very helpful.Can you believe all the ship passengers that don't realise whats such a short way off. Handy too, if you've already seen Rome. Shhhhhh......................

Many people on cruise boats often have a day in Civitavecchia, usually it is spent rushing to Rome and looking at the sites, it can be a long day and not enough time to really see Rome. A great alternative is to catch a bus or taxi (preferred) up to the wonderful town of Tarquinia, approx. half hour away. The old town was built in 5th century with a fort and wall surrounding it overlooking the valley. It is a little known gem. The old town is beautiful, so much to see and do, a relaxing lunch and strolling the streets with great photo opportunities. Highly recommended

Such a large port, the town is obviously dominated by it. Some interesting old buildings in the old part of the town but it's the very busy port that attract th attention.

The old part of Arpino is this place situated just above the "modern" city. The old part - civitavechia being from 7th century BC. What is left is some stone walls and also the port to the city which is made like a triangle so the visitor had to go in sideways, making it impossible to straight with a shield. Nowadays the place is nice for tourists to see and also young couples having pic nic here. Both Gaius Marius and Cicero lived here...And yes, the city of Arpino is one of my favourite small italian cities - I can't understand how they managed to bring all the building material on top of the mountain! If you want to go where there are no other tourists go here!

Il paesino di civita vecchia sorge isolato e nascosto da tutto il resto del pianeta. Non ci sono negozi bar e ristoranti. Una passeggiata breve permette di incontrare le poche persone cielo abitano e di godere di una vista sui monti abruzzesi. A pochi km il nuovo paesino Arpino con negozi ed insegne di un passato ormai scomparso. Qui potete trovare anche un negozio di fotografia con macchine usate a pellicola li da sempre... Consiglio anche l acquisto di prodotti alimentari come pane prosciutto e formaggi.

la visita ad arpino merita per la presenza del vecchio borgo di Civitavecchia. Ben tenuto e curato, è immerso in un luogo dove il silenzio regna padrone interrotto sporadicamente dalle pochissime macchine dei residenti. Per visitarlo e girarlo a piedi occorre poco tempo, meno di un'ora con le dovute soste contemplative.

Un posto che merita davvero di esser visitato, sopratutto per poter tastare con mano la storia di questo posto della ciociaria... L'ambiente è suggestivo e unico nel suo genere :-)

Arriviamo nel minuscolo borgo di Civitavecchia all'ora del tramonto.Incontriamo un abitante che ci introduce,con le sue gentili indicazioni,alle bellezze del luogo.In giro non c'è nessun altro..sembra quasi che le mura che lo circondano siano frutto della nostra immaginazione arriviamo all'arco a sesto acuto(unico al mondo ancora intatto,c'è poi quello di Micene,ma è stato ricostruito) e mi sento stordita da tanta imponente,semplice bellezza.In un altro paese un'opera di questo valore sarebbe valorizzata al massimo,nel nostro non è praticamente segnalata.Bisogna essere viaggiatori che non si accontentano delle solite località turistiche per arrivarci o fortunati che ci capitano casualmente.E' un luogo carico di fascino da non perdere,anche per la splendida vista sul paese sottostante di Arpino e le colline circostanti..il borgo in se è grazioso e merita i pochi passi che occorrono per farci un giro

Ci sono stato con un gruppo di 70 amici per una gita nel Frusinate dopo aver visitato l'Abbazia di Casamari e le cascate di Isola del Liri siamo stati ad Arpino nel borgo Civitavecchia un museo a cielo aperto qualcosa di unico e splendito, girare per le vie di questo borgo e passare sotto l'arco da l'impressione di tornare indietro di 2000 anni.Peccoto che è poco pubblicizzato e poco segnalato.L'ente Locale dovrebbe fare di più.

E' veramente un tuffo nel passato passeggiare per le vie e sotto l'arco di questo fantastico borgo. Nei giorni festivi e nel periodo estivo è abbastanza visitato da persone delle zone limitrofe e non....ne vale veramente la pena sia per la storia ma anche per la fantastica vista su cui si espone il borgo.Stupendo
