Maybe it was because it was raining, maybe because of the touristy feeling with all the groups that were arriving, even after the chant had already began, doing a little bit of noise to sit down. Or maybe I just expected too much. Don't get me wrong, the place is beautiful and the chant as well, but it didn't get to my heart. Some days before we had seen the Gregorian chant at the Basilica San Miniato al Monte in Florence and there yes, we felt true Epiphany, as being transported to another time. But, as I said, maybe it was just bad luck of the day we were there. We just got the feeling it was not worth going so far to see it.

A 12th century Benedictine monastery restored in the 1800's, the abbey became active again in the 1990's. Today it is a wonderful example of what is so unique about Italian history in Tuscany -- a perfect blend of Classical, Gothic and Romanesque architecture set on sublime landscapes of breathtaking beauty. The location is a photographer's paradise. The exterior façade is one of simple forms, crowned with arches. Inside, there are three naves with columns and a wooden roof. The setting and abbey are supremely tranquil. Morning, afternoon and evening Gregorian chanting is blissful and not to be missed.

This Abbey is a step back in time with tranquil surroundings and a huge towering Cypress tree next to and almost as tall as the building which makes an awesome photo. The Romanesque church was built during the 12th century to enlarge the pre-existant monastery. It is one of the few places in Italy where one can listen to the Gregorian Chant (at selected times during the course of the day), which is an original way of praying according to a very old tradition in the Church. There is also a bookshop nearby where you can purchase items manufactured by various religious communities. The Abbey is well worth a visit if you are in the Montalcino area.

Built over an 8th century chapel, this fine example of 11th century Gothic architecture is lovely in a beautiful setting. A great day hike from Montalcino (take the bus back) for the energetic--3 to 4 hours through wine country and back wood trails--some highway walking.

This abbey is a short drive from Montalcino, and as per all the other parts of the Val d'Orcia region, the view from the Abbey and driving towards the Abbey is absolutely breathtaking. Though the best views are definitely a bit further from the abbey itself. If you are in Montalcino,this abbey is worth the visit.

This old church from the 9th century is much interesting to visit, to go inside and even to listen to the gregorian songs. But the strongest impression made it to us when we just saw it from the little shop. The church down in the valley just gave us a feeling of serenity, a feeling which no other building has done before.

If you are in Monalcino, you have to visit this Abbiazia. This is a great piece of history / monument of architecture - and living catolic church. At certain hours the monks are singing the prayers in the ancient church. Very recommended place !!

The church, grounds, surrounding landscape is the perfect picture of old world Italy. We stayed in a villa a short walk from the Abbey. Walked there and took many pictures. The architecture is Amazing. Time well spent. Has postcards and other items for small donations....
