The Isonzo Rivermouth Nature Reserve (in Italian Foce dell'Isonzo) is located in the eastern part of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia along the lower 15 km of the course of the river and covers an area of 2.338 hectares.The wetlands of the North Adriatic were created over the last 20.000 years as the sea level rose and dropped again, the sea water gradually flooded flat land along the sea. These processes are still at work today, also the rivers deposit sediments that helped build the stretch of sandy beaches marking the outer limit of the existing North Adriatic lagoon areas.The best starting point to visit the reserve is Isola della Cona, a 50 hectare restored freshwater marsh. There is an attractive visitor centre with a small museum. The visitors can proceed along the nature trail winding up to the mouth of the Isonzo River. Several bird hides have been put up which provide great views.The North-East Adriatic wetlands are a paradise for ornithologists and bird watchers. Over 400 species have been sighted here, which is a large number compared with just over 550 bird species to be found in Europe.The number of species observed is particularly high in the month of April (180 recorded so far), while the number of "non-passerine" birds can exceed 50.000 in the month of November.The reserve is home to small herds of Camargue horses, which are in summer joined in grazing by cattle.

From it's Slovenian source and along the battlefields of World War I (please read Ernest Hemingway, "A farewell to Paradise"), the Isonzo river reaches it's estuary into the Adriatic Sea. Between it's main river bed and the Canale Quarantia (slightly East of the main river), there is a narrow peninsula called Isola della Cona. Here, the Italian organization of National Parks has reshaped an old farmhouse to serve as a visitor's center, whilst a nearby building has a café and spaces where educational courses can be given. The visitor's center serves as a starting point for a walk around an artificial lake, where nowadays many birds breed, and you truly can see how nature finds it's way back to... nature. On top of that, several horses also live in the area; during summer season, you may book a ride on them.

Ho passato qui alla Cona una giornata l'anno scorso, ad agosto. E' uno di quei luoghi che ti conquista e quando riguardi le foto fatte ti sale la nostalgia. Spero di ritornarci al più presto per altre meravigliose osservazioni e "catture" con la macchina fotografica.

Purtroppo la struttura e i camminamenti sono in stato di abbandono, peccato perché dal punto di vista naturalistico il luogo è ricco di fauna e flora. Comunque consiglio a tutti una visita e non dimenticate di portarvi gli stivali di plastica per camminare nella palude.

Una delle piu' belle oasi naturali della zona della bassa friulana, ricca di vita , uccelli pesci, acque dai colori magici da visitare sia di giorno che all'alba per rubare foto particolari della vita naturale. Caratteristici i casono costruiti sulle acque. da vedere assolutamente . portare Autan!

Posto affascinante. Un po' lasciate andare le strutture. Da valorizzare e migliorare l'accesso, sia come strade sia come segnaletica.

Un itinerario e una località magica! I casoni fatti sull'acqua, le barchette abbandonate, la laguna, i rumori della natura. D'estate un posto stupendo per fare una bella passeggiata al fresco, portare i cani, andare in bicicletta. Ma d'inverno secondo me da il meglio di se. Io, la mia reflex, i miei cani, il silenzio, la nebbia, la natura e i suoi suoni e movimenti. Non faciel da trovare ma d'effetto! Il Friuli!

Questa area protetta e' un'oasi naturalistica la quale offre l'habitat ideale per varie specie di uccelli migratori, si possono ammirare i cavalli Camargue,fare escursioni con la barca.Un esperienza unica per tutti.
