This small church was built roughly 1083 - a very long time ago - claimed to be the oldest in Mantua. Well worth the visit and don't miss the interior. In Italy you will run across these ancient small chapel type churches; this is a fine example. If you're looking for modern and plastic, this is not for you. Old and stone without the fantastic paintings that adorn most religious sites throughout Italy. See what it was like before the Renaissance.

It is round (= "rotonda"), it goes deep down in the ground (sign that it is really ancient), it is simple and visit can take less than 15 minutes with no guide. You can see the structure of the plant and pay attention to ancient paintings on the walls, but they are few. No furnitures nor other decoration : just the pleisure to admire one of the most ancient example of romanesque art in Italy.Important : this monument is kept by the Dominican fraternity, there is no ticket, just a free offer (please, leave something...).

An 11th century chapel that was later covered by other buildings and rediscovered. The restoration is extensive, and there is little ornamentation that survives, but the building itself is fascinating. Spend half an hour exploring this little gem, you will be glad you took the time.

The Rotonda di San Lorenze dates back to the 11th century. It is probably standing on the site of a Roman temple. Inside are frescoes from the 11th & 12th century. Worth seeing.

This unique small Romanesque church is located the heart of the historical center, adjacent to the famous basilica of San Andrea. I have no idea if the church is open every day, I visited one morning during the bank holiday. Really very characteristic already admiring the outside with its many small which is built with bricks, but internally it struck me the most, a circular structure and can be visited just by walking along the circular corridor. Small and dark but really exciting, it's like being hundreds of years back in time.

The oldest church in Mantova dates from the middle of the eleventh century and is historically significant and has a very interesting circular form not unlike the Round Church in my home city of Cambridge, a photograph of which is on display. Its simplicity , typical of the period produces aneffect which I find immensely calming, predisposing to silent prayer or contemplation, and a sense of wonder that it managed to survive the vicissitudes of fortune to which it has been subject through its long and hazardous life.It is well worth a visit, even if only for 10 minutes R and R, and any small donation would be welcome since no formal charge is levied

The Rotonda di San Lorenzo is located in city centre, close to Paizza Erbe, very easy to find. The architecture of the curch is really amazing and it must be visited. In addition in the area you will find a lot of nice bars where it is worth to stop buy and enjoy a drink.
