Spello is a beautiful Umbrian hill top village in the provincia of Perugia very near to Asissi it is a busy little village very old and very well preserved , Even at this time of the year it has an abundance of flowers , many small bars and resturants we left the car out side of the village and walked up the hill to the center , the views are spectacular beautiful olive groves and vinyards we found you can eat and drink there very cheaply the food and wine was typically Umbrian , very cheap and good very nice small shops selling beautiful Umbrian ceramics

Spello, Italy is a beautiful mid evil town in the Umbria area. It is a wonderful hillside village with homes that are connected side by side with quaint shops and wonderful restaurant's. A definite place to see off the beaten path and so worth it. It is a little off the beaten path and a definite to go to to enjoy the history and ancient village as it would be thousands of years ago. Be prepared to walk up steep hilly narrow cobblestone streets and enjoy the quaint gardens. Very scenic.

A festival that shouldn't be missed. Everyone in the town get involved and you can help too. They start around 8pm on the Saturday evening, work through the night to produce the most fantastic flower carpets and pictures. Exquisite!

A perfect escape for travelers wanting to experience a beautiful Umbrian town with out the hordes of tourist groups.We spent the afternoon here to explore this little town, every corner you turn, every cobblestone path you walk into... A lovely surprise awaits you. Surprises can be a view, or long narrow cobblestone paths lined with rows of beautiful flowers and climbing to the top has breathtaking views of the Umbrian hill sides. The gelaterria we stopped into had the typical gelato flavors and the quality superb.

I have been to Spello many times but was never able to see this beautiful festival until this year. It has a long history and the town is in festival mode for the whole weekend so there are many visitors. It begins on Saturday night when different groups start filling in intricate drawings laid down on the ground of the main streets with different colored flower petals. Everything is done by hand and these groups of mainly young people work through the entire night to be finished by Sunday morning. My Spellano friends advised me to go see the spectacle very early Sunday morning before the crowds. Best advice ever. I set my alarm for 5:30 am and got to see this beautiful form of art as it was being finished and at my leisure. I couldn't believe the details that were possible with simple flower petals. Also to see the transformation from a piece of paper the night before to the finished work was spectacular and very moving. I then went for my coffe and pastry at Bar Tulia and was back at my apartment at 7:15 am when people were starting to arrive.

this is the event of the year in Spello. You have to see it to believe it. The hard work by the whole community is amazing, it's a year round project of site specific art on display for less than a day. Not to be missed

The village of Spello is worth a visit at anytime. If you time your visit for the flower festival in June it is even more magical. Over night people work creating the most magnificent pictures out of dried flower petals. They spend the year drying boxes of petals in all colours to make huge arrangements on the streets of the town. However a visit to Spello is a must at any time if in Umbria. It is a great village to base yourself to explore the area. Spello is an ancient walled town that tumbles down the hills. There are a number of excellent restaurants so you can walk to dinner, no driving or parking worries. I cant wait to go back.

Le Infiorate di Spello hanno una lunga tradizione culturale e artistica. Vedendo le foto di una collezione privata di un fotografo del luogo, si apprezzano gli stili artistici che negli anni l'hanno caratterizzata. E' vero che negli anni il numero dei tappeti è diminuito per cui l'effetto che facevano di tappezzare tutta la via principale del paese si è un po' perduto, però in compenso, la qualità non è mai venuta meno. Sono coinvolte anche le scuole in ogni ordine e grado, dalla scuola di infanzia alle superiori di primo grado. E' stata anche fondata non solo l'associazione degli Infioratori, ma anche l'Accademia dei Boccioli, ovvero una realtà che avvia i bambini e ragazzi alla realizzazione dei tappeti floreali. E' una maratona che conviene fare almeno una volta nella vita, dalla sera del sabato che precede la Festa del Corpus Domini (i tappeti in fin dei conti si fanno per onorare l'ostia consacrata) si allestiscono i tendoni sotto i quali i Maestri Infioratori (così si chiamano gli addetti) eseguiranno i disegni che verranno poi ricoperti di petali, durante la notte, fino al mattino. Tutto si conclude con il passaggio della giuria, e della Processione solenne, durante la quale il Vescovo, e solo lui, portando l'ostensorio, calpesta i magnifici tappeti (devo dire sempre con molta attenzione per non sciuparli). La sera della domenica si conclude con le solite polemiche o esultazioni rispettivamente dei perdenti e dei premiati che si contendono il Properzio d'Oro. Dal giorno dopo si riparte per nuove idee per il tappeto successivo.....

Un'esperienza unica la vive chi visitando Spello durante la festa delle Infiorate vi si trova immerso per caso, ma anche quando il passaggio è mirato a recarvicisi. Il giorno dell'Infiorata il paese vive il suo momento migliore di tutto l'anno, siccome artisti di fama mondiale si misurano in creazioni tridimensionali e cromatiche incredibili pur usufruendo d'una superficie piana, cioè una strada od una piazza. Spello è comunque una visione già da quando vi ci si avvicina dalla strada che da Perugia conduce a Foligno. Il paese appare sulla sinistra con il suo declinare di costruzioni più o meno grandiose e datate nei secoli. L'amministrazione comunale dirige la sua politica edile alla conservazione degli ambiti paesaggistici, mettendo in rilievo il mantenimento di strutture tipiche ed instillando nei residenti il desiderio d'apparire ecologisti in tutte le occasioni, infatti ogni angolo di Spello è un piccolo giardino gradevole allo sguardo, profumato all'olfatto ed un souvenir da ricordare per sempre.
