It's been almost 7-8 years since my first visit to the Porziuncula at Santa Maria degli Angeli (St Mary of the Angels) Church in Assisi - yet I will always treasure the fond memories of this very unique place! For me, the Porziuncula is a very special place - perhaps the only one of its kind in this entire universe? The Porziuncula is a little chapel which is built within the Basilica of St Mary of the An (Santa Maria degli Angeli) - it's a little chapel (a little portion) within a huge big Basilica - one needs to visit and experience the special-ness of this place to appreciate its very special characteristics. For those who embrace the spirit of St Francis of Assisi and who are familiar with his life experiences, being present in the Porziuncula and whispering a little prayer from the heart, one can experience a kind of "heaven on earth" - such was my personal experience when I first stepped into this very awesome place in Assisi - it's an experience which left such a deep and lasting impression on me, which lasted for a good 7-8 years.I first visited the Porziuncula one summer day on 11 July 2007 - and I remembered I spent a good afternoon just being in there, to soak in the spirit of Assisi and of St Francis - the little man of Peace who had created such a big impact in the world. Francis' simple lifestyle is popular and he is well known even amongst non- Christians and across the various continents of the world. When you go to Assisi, do make time to visit the Porziuncula and let it be a visit you will always remember!Pax et Bonum!

In the basilica del Santa Maria degli Angeli is the tiny Porziuncola, where St. Francis of Assisi began his order of Franciscan friars. This tiny building is in the middle of a huge basilica, which is very beautiful in its own right. But the juxtaposition of an ancient little chapel, stunning in its simplicity and historical significance as the first headquarters of the Order of St. Francis, makes it a very special place indeed.

This chapel in contained within S. Maria Degli Angeli. It is totally in the wrong place. It is not appropriate to have a chapel at a crossing. It would have been better located behind the high altar. Anyway- Who am i to give advice to the Italians. There was not much information available advising on the date when built etc.,

Very special place to visit when you're in Assisi. A bit off the beaten track but very worthwhile. Make sure to get a guide to take you so that you have the whole story.

The enormous monster of a church that encloses it, the painting that covers much of it, the barriers and the rules, leave almost nothing of the 'sense' of St Francis himself. Perhaps it was wrong to expect any. Perhaps it would have been wiser to go for a walk in the country, learning to love God's creation, mother earth and brother sun.

Anyone who studies St. Francis of Assisi, or St. Clare of Assisi needs to know about the key role of the Porziuncola. It is worth reading about ahead of time, or having a tour guide explain. It has the feeling of a very holy place. People seem to be in awe just walking by it with great respect.

Seeing is believing. I wasnt able to understand this porziuncula thing until i saw it. It is situated inside the basilica of St. Mary of the angels.

Even for those who might not have a spiritual background, this special place is one that gives you a feeling of peace and well being.

You shouldn't travel to Assisi and miss the Santa Maria degli Angeli Church. It was built around the Porziuncola Oratory, the church that St. Francis restored in his interpretation of Jesus' request to "repair my house." St. Clare took her vow of poverty here. It is amazing to see it in the midst of the 8th largest church in the world but exciting to find a place of such significance in the life of St. Francis.A lot of people probably skip this church because it is set off from the main part of the old Assisi town. It is worth the effort. And if you are taking the train to Assisi it is an easy (and flat!) walk from the train station.

In Santa Maria degli Angeli, by the Assisi train station. This is where I find peace. I plan to return often.
