A nice walk, you can contemplate silence, beauty, nature. However in order to deeply appreciate this place, a certain kind of "spirituality" is needed. I am way too skeptical for it, I guess...

I personally suggest to do a nice walk from Assisi to Eremo delle Carceri, more or less one hour. The landscape is awesome ! You do not need to rush in these kind of experience/visit, you need time. The effort pay the visit to the monastery especially to contemplate the beauty, silence and take the time to reflect and pray.

A few miles walk out of Assisi, (4 km) this beautiful place (with a church and park-like grounds) are the caves and hillsides where Francis of Assisi and his first followers went away to contemplate and pray. The oak tree, where St. Francis reputedly preached to the birds, is near the stone bridge leading from the building and chapels to beautiful wooded walkways, where the caves of Francis and some of his followers can be seen today. A wonderful walk to a very special place, where magnificent views of a wooded gorge make it a perfect place for contemplation.

We took a taxi up to this retreat which was so tranquil. In addition to the building which is fascinating, make sure that you press on to explore the open air 'chapels' in the surrounding forest - they were both remarkable and deserted. We walked back down (including 3 children under 10) in a little over one hour and whilst the first part is not the best on the road, the second part provided a beautiful walk through the countryside with great views, including of Rocco Maggiore.

This is a lovely place to visit. It's high up on mount Subasio. The walk through is well planned and quite beautiful. The cave where St. Francis prayed and lived is preserved there. You can actually stop and say a prayer in the very spot. There are benches and quiet areas for meditation and prayer. It's 4km up from Assisi. We took a taxi because it was a warm day. Many people walk up the winding road. I think next time I'd walk back to town but still taxi up.

The town of Assisi is on a hill at the foot of Mount Subasio. We hiked to the top of the mountain to the place that St. Francis and his friars used as their place of solitude and quiet. Visiting the 15th century hermitage built over the caves of the friars and praying on the mountain trails nearby was a wonderful experience. The hike is arduous -- you can also take a taxi to the top and then walk on the relaxing summit trails.

Even other tuorists here show respect, keep quiet and pray and meditate. His grotto and other Caves made a deep impresion.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of Francis and share his experiences in getting away for some stillness then this is for you. You will feel his presence and walk through history. Great visit. No good at all allowed inside / not even your own, so eat beforehand. Limited snack at the gate.

The Franciscan spirit is up here; beside the Basilica if you want to feel the original franciscan spirit you must climb up to the Eremo

The Eremo is a beautiful peaceful place to visit both if you're following in the footsteps of St. Francis or not. If you are simply looking for a beautiful place on the mountains this is really nice. If you're trying to understand how st. Francis lived out in the wilderness, here you can really envisage it. It would have helped if there was someone to give us a bit of background on the place.
