A very sad experience but a must to visit if in the area. The cemetery is beautifully looked after with beautiful lawns.

One of our favourite places to go for an hour or so of peaceful thought. Impeccably kept, beautiful location.

I visited this cemetery April 2013. It is the most wonderful cemetary, my mother always wanted to come here to visit her brother and place a poppy, unfortunately my mother passed away so we went instead. Now the instructions are a bit lucid on here. You need to go through Chieti so don't go on to Pescara. There are no english speaking people here, take a photo of the cemetary with you. When you get to Di Sangro town ship (it means you have missed the turn off to the cemetary) go to the police station and they can show you. It is sign posted but also easy to miss. The cemetary is on a hill. One of the most beautiful places in the world. A tear or some were shed that day. Sad to leave but happy for the beautiful views our soldiers have. I recommend you get a rental from Rome with a GPS as you will have trouble getting out of Rome, once you are on your way it is easy as. Don't use the co-ordinates that are on the sight here. But do put in Contrada Sentineele, it will take you straight there. A beautiful drive and you can do it in a day. You won't need to stay anywhere.Who ever goes, enjoy your visit with your loved ones, you will feel the wairua of all our soldiers who died to help the Italians....as One lovely teacher said to us on that day, "Thankyou for letting your loved one fight for us, it is because of them we have our beautiful country"....We thank the Italians for looking after our loved ones where they not rest. We will never forget them and knowing how well they are looked after puts us at ease."He Maumahara matou i a ratou" We will remember them.....

Visiting my great uncle's war grave at Sangro River was a moving highlight of our time in Italy. The cemetery is situated overlooking a beautiful valley and the War Graves Commission along with the Italian Government have done an incredible job. The gardens are well kept and lovely and there couldn't be a more beautiful place for our fallen soldiers. We were really anxious about whether or not we could get to the cemetery easily having read other reviews online. We took onboard Christine R's review and contacted Maurizio Tours (see contact details below) who more than happily arranged to pick us up from the Fossacesia -Torino di Sangro Train Station and for €50 drove us to the cemetery, left us there for an agreed period of time then collected us. He kindly also showed us a nearby church before dropping us off back at the station. Our journey began in Rome. We had travelled down by bus from here, stayed the night at Pescara in a lovely B&B and then caught a quick inexpensive train to Fossacesia - Torino di Sangro the next day which took approx 20 minutes. To be honest, we could have stayed in Fossacesia itself and the cemetery is not very far from the train station, a walk uphill if you are able to. This is a stunning part of Italy's coastline and worth coming to explore (Abruzzo region). Maurizio Tours: phone 348 354 6773, www.mauriziotour.it, email info@mauriziotour.it

This was a very beautiful and moving experience. We looked online from New Zealand and foudn details of Uncle Garth. We stayed one night in Pescara and as we only had a tight timetable negotiated for a taxi to take us to Sangro River War Cemetery and back to Pescara. Our taxi driver spoke no English, so we communicated through my halting school girl French. He was so helpful. And waited at the cemetery while we found Uncle Garth. The taxi driver took us back up by the coast which was beautiful and we got to see lots of untouristy parts of Italy. Absolutely worth it.
