We did not realize this castle existed until we stumbled upon it. Apparently the castle was built in 1452 by King Alfonso of Aragona over the remains of an ancient fortress. Great spot to take pictures

The sea is eroding slowly the port-side town of Ortona, as if it were a pile of sand near the tide's ebb. The crumble is occurring on the 693 foot high spur of fragile sandstone upon which the town sits, and as such, is falling into the ocean. but don't fret, erosion has been occurring here since the 6th century. Even the Romans were plagued by constant landslides and even worst, pirates a constant source of irritation. We amble out to inspect the Argonese Castle, a fortress whose remaining fortifications seam to embrace the sea that erodes it. We crossed Arravecchia, a neighbourhood of narrow streets and arches to get to another gem, the Passeggiata Orientale, a walkway with breathtaking view of the sea, overlooking the port. its particularly romantic at sunset, when the many fishing boats idle home after a day's work. There's a swag of churches, all baroque, to visit with the beautiful cross of Santa Brigida, dating back to 1360, a definite drawcard. From thethe Hotel Ideale where we stayed the night, there's abroad vista of the tranquil countryside. Don't miss the view of the sea from Miramare and the rich local fare, based on fish, at its eatery. Just south of Ortona several kms from the coast you feel as if you've been dropped into the Middle Ages. On one walk to scrutinise the imposing medieval ramparts and towers which are remarkably well preserved. The other side, at Lancianovecchia, we loved the battlements that surround its dramatic gateways. Among its more important monuments is the 14th century cathedral of the Madonna del Ponte a delightful sanctuary near a couple of exceedingly interesting churches.

This castle is perfectly located in Ortona. If you look on the sides of the castle walls, you will see a plant growing on the sides...this is capers!!!! We were told so by Señor Di Tullio on our tour around town, he was our host. There is an excellent fish restaurant nearby. Go see the Canadian War Cemetery at the end of town, it is a lovely tribute to the brave men who lost their lives at the Battle of Ortona. Look on Airbnb for Anna's place, she is a lovely host!

We didn't expect such a nice castle in Ortona, where we went by accident actually. We didn't know where to go when we were in Pescara, so we just hit the road to the south and ran into this beautiful castle.

This castle is build in a fantastic location with views over the sea. It is a wonderful spot to just wonder around, take in the beauty and enjoy the views, and it is free! Two caveats - one it is very obviously restored and two there is absolutely no information about the castle inside it - although there is a small and not very informative sign outside. Maybe to most people those two things don't really matter and if they don't then they will enjoy this attraction.

Il castello è spoglio ma restaurato e consente una bella passeggiata panoramica dall'alto delle mura. Si domina tutta la costa. Per arrivarci si passa per le belle casette del centro storico, purtroppo le poche rimaste dalla distruzione dell'ultima guerra.....

Il Castello Aragonese di Ortona si erge ancora a baluardo di antiche gesta marinaresche sul promontorio omonimo della città. Domina la zona portuale ed il traffico di merci che anche sulla ferrovia costiera transita nei pressi. Ortona è proprio alle sue spalle ed il castello è parte integrante del paesaggio. I secoli di vicende che lo hanno visto protagonista indiscusso hanno però lasciato sulle sue mura segni decadenti ed indelebili, dati da collassi sia franosi del terreno verso il mare che da distruzioni ed incuria. Ultimamente i Beni Architettonici lo hanno restaurato e nelle parti fondanti, la struttura è solida ma diversi ambiti sono andati perduti. Al suo interno vi si svolgono diverse attrattive folkloristiche locali ed anche avvenimenti culturali internazionali, soprattutto nei periodi estivi. Ciò avviene negli spazi cortilivi e nei vialetti dell'ampia spianata interna contornata di ruderi murari. L'ho visitato una domenica d'ottobre nel quale il vento era assai forte disturbandone la quiete della visione e costringendomi a riparare spesso dietro le mura, per non sentire le folate chiaccherando con amici. La giornata pur a discapito del vento era però soleggiata e negli anfratti al riparo si godeva sia la vista della città che d'un pò di sollievo termico. La parte conservata meglio è sicuramente quella affacciata su Ortona che rende l'idea del maschio aragonese con il suo basamento a pianta quadrata e torrioni d'angolo rotondeggianti.

Non sapevo che ci fosse questo castello ad ortone, nonostante sia a 20 km di distanza. Piacevole sorpresa. Ci sono rimaste solo le mura esterne ma sono ben tenute e si può entrare nei giardini interni. Una vista sul mare spettacolare. Dovrebbere mettere qualche informazione in più su questo castello, visto che ci sono andata diverse volte ma la sala dove ci sono foto e forse storia del castello, l'ho sempre trovata chiusa. Nel complesso : da visitare.
